Does anyone here know an alternative mailchimp-like service which is free?

I strongly recommend Campaign Monitor. It isn't free, but it's really cheap (check out their pay per campaign pricing). The downside of the service is that they really can be annoying in terms of adding the information about agreement to receive the emails you send.

Mandrill is excellent but not free, what is the problem OP with Mail Chimp? It's free and works like a charm.

Amazon SES is indeed a very good service.
There are hell lot of tutorial if you google it...and if you set up DKIM and SPF records correctly, then the results will be outstanding.
