Please explain Difference between these footprints

Hi

Can someone explain me these three variations of footprint and how google extracts results

1)site:www.army.mil weight

Result - 3.7k


2)site:army.mil weight

result - 67k


3)site:.mil weight

Result - 38


I still understand the first two ... but shouldt the third include results of all .mil domains ??

Check again. You're likely to get much more on a second attempt.

1) It will list out all the pages from "www.army.mil" having the keyword "weight" anywhere in the page ( title, description, meta - anywhere)
2) It will list out all the pages from "www.army.mil", "army.mil" and other subdomains of army.mil having the keyword "weight" anywhere in the page ( title, description, meta - anywhere). better try site:*.army.mil "weight" if you are trying to do this.
3) That query is most probably wrong. Try with site:*.mil weight which would bring up results from all mil domains.

i tried 5 times... but it kept showing same results...

In Option 2)
try site:*.army.mil "weight"

When i put an * in front it will just give me results from its sub domain ???


In Option 3)Try with site:*.mil weight

I did try this and the results jumped to 59k - the "*" (wild character) - allows for any random word to come before the "." - correct ?

SO in option 2 when i am getting 62k results -- should this new footprint of "*.mil weight" -- give me much much more results ??

ALso for the keyword - if i dont put the keyword under quotes -- it will take all synonyms as well ??

hmm... strange,.. i guess results are varying by ip and country...

Google would know what they mean better, but the last option should given the largest number of results.

Well it's all hit-and-trial really. I did not test any of the keywords so you might have to vary them in order to get what you are looking for. Use the official web page for this http://www.google.com/advanced_search
It will become clear for you by itself.
