Ok, I'm genuinely curious - as a Brit, it seems the flag-waving, patriotic hoo-hah stuff from that side of the pond is everywhere - is this true? I spent a few months in the states but never saw much of this sort of thing, so is it confined to games / schools / camp America? Are there many people who rebel against it?

Well you have to understand that this game was the first professional sports game after the bombing that happened at the Boston Marathon.

And your correct when you say that it is not everywhere. You are not going to walk into a coffee shop and be greeted by U-S-A chants. It typically happens during sporting events or patriotic times. (Olympics, elections, ect)

Ok, fair enough - we don't all assume your country is a hotbed of seething nationalism, though I realise there are pockets (the South, the Centre... )

I should point out I had nothing but warmhearted welcomes from your countrymen during my visit, more than I can say for parts of my own...

It's expected that patriotism/nationalism goes into overdrive during horrid national events. It's the way humans cope, the illusion of safety, assuring ourselves that our "tribe" will carry on despite setback.

One last thing. This happened in the the extreme North East. One of the most liberal areas of the entire country. Pretty far away from the south and center.

Hmmm, it's interesting how these pockets exist, whether they're small towns or just created inside football games. Pockets of goodness... (I'm looking at you, Austin)
