So I've been a member on this forum for quite a while and I thought that I should give back to you guys.
DISCLAIMER
This is the "lazy mans guide" which means that you'll need some start up cash, this isn't the most cost effective way but it doesn't require that much work, most of the content is written by other people. I will be showing you guys a step by step guide as I build up a new site.
Target- Our target will be to make $20 a day from adsense in 3 months.
Budget- Your budget will depend on how much work you want to put in but expect to invest around $50-200.
First Step- We will be researching our niches, if you plan on writing the content yourself look for something that you enjoy and can write about. If you like lizards than make a site about caring for lizards, if you like baseball then make a site about how to play baseball and how to improve. There are 2 tools that I like to use for this, google adwords keyword planner, and wordtracker. I will usually look around for something that I like to write about and search it up in google keyword planner. Then compare it in wordtracker. Just for a demonstration, I searched up "baseball" one of the keywords that popped up is
"fantasy baseball websites"
avg monthly searches- 140
competition-high
suggested bid- $1.52
This would not be a good keyword for me since it is somewhat seasonal, and the avg monthly search is low. When searching this on google the first sites that pop up are msn, fox, and cbs. It is very difficult to outrank large powerful sites like that.
However if you already picked baseball it would not hurt to write an article about this and add it to your site.
Second Step- Once you've selected your niche you're ready to buy a domain and a hosting plan. I personally use godaddy for hosting and domain registration since it's reliable and with coupon codes it's really cheap. If you're a newbie you might want to use a site like godaddy since they have good customer service reps that can help you set up wordpress and troubleshoot problems on your site. Don't spend more than $60 a year on hosting unless of course your site is getting 100,000 visits a day.
Tips on picking a domain name
If you picked something in the cooking niche then you wouldn't want a domain like yankeesgurl582 or cellphonecenter, you might want to pick something like 30minutemeals, vegetarianeats, goodvegancooking, minutedinner, or anything appropriate. Try to go for .com, if you found an excellent domain name and .com isn't available then .net or .org would be suitable. Try not to have any random numbers, with the cooking niche example if your site is about making easy meals then 15minutemeals would be suitable, if your site is about pets then it shouldn't be pets353, pets101 would be OK though, try to avoid hyphens (-) and any other unnecessary characters.
Third Step- Setting up wordpress
You don't have to use wordpress but it's recommended. Wordpress has many themes, offers a variety of plugins, and it's easy to use. Once you set up wordpress you're going to want to pick out a good theme. Don't pick out anything that's too complicated to use, I pick out very simple themes that are easy on the eyes. I will usually use a white background with black or gray toolbar/menu bars. You will also need something that will make your site stand out from the other sites using the same theme that you're using.
This is the part where you will need to pay $5 to get a good header image designed on fiverr. Look around on fiverr or a similar site for someone who makes good quality logo's that you like, this will be the header image on your site. It is important to get a header image since it will help make your site look very professional and unique, it's also catchy and will help people remember your site better. Lots of companies do this, when you see a lizard you probably think of Gieco, this is what companies want to happen. So get a header image. You should also add an about page, this will make the readers feel like you are really passionate about the website and the niche. If you selected a cooking niche then your about page should talk about how you used to cook with your grandma as a child and how you're sharing recipes that have been in your family for 20 generations, make it sound real though. You should also make a contact page so your readers/visitors could feel like they could give you feedback on your site. And last but not least if you're using adsense you should really add a privacy policy to your site, these are easy to write and there are a few sites that will write a privacy policy for you.
I think this is a good way to end the first post, next post will be about writing content and some more info on setting up the site.
