High PR links cause sites to drop

One of the PR sites in my network, which has good stats for PA, DA, Mozrank, TrustFlow and CitationFlow, causes the top sites I link to to drop in the SERPs. There is nothign shady about this domain, all the pages are indexed, and it's been my site for over a year so it's not like I just got it and didn't realize there was a penalty or soetmthing on it.

Is hitting this site with more links the way to go or what should I do?

I'm curious to know too... I heard that it's best to build less but more quality links to the site.

Are you positive it's the links from that domain that are causing your drops? Google's released some updates recently. If the domain is truly as clean as you say (no shady anchor texts either), it's unlikely it's the links that are causing the drops. But yes lower quantity + higher quality is the way to go these days.

It might not be the links, but I've noticed that a site will be holding a rank without changing and then I link to it and it drops the next day by 30-50 positions.

I haven't done any spammy linkbuilding to my sites and they only have good quality content on them and nothing is spun.

How are you adding the links, just a random link without content or anything at all or are you building something really relevant to the other site.

Is the site with high stats relevant to the other sites? If you are speaking about cats and the other one talks about car wheels links won't have great value.

This is absolutely weird ? Have you seen rankings come back once you have removed the link ?

Also sometimes when building links its normal to see these kinds of dances, in general it predicts a positive movement.

This was back before penguin 1.0, but I had a site go from page 2 to page 5 then bounce to #3 and up to #1 within a few days after some shady (but then acceptable) link building. Take that with a grain of salt though, that was years ago.

Is that true that the site really has to be relevant? I always though it was just the anchor text that mattered.

Relevancy doesn't matter at all, take a look at top ranking sites backlink profiles with blatant backlink building. You'll notice relevancy doesn't matter at all.

maybe wait a little bit longer and keep track of the results.

Well, for what it's worth, I've just noticed exactly the same thing.

I have a site that I've been trying to rank for 90+ days, and it's been driving my crazy because I've never taken that long to rank a site - ever. It easily got to 50-60, but then seemed to just get stuck there.

Last week Wednesday, I allowed some paid high PR links to expire (didn't renew them). Saturday, it jumped from #56 to #8, and today it's at #6.

I have no idea what to make of that... other newer sites that were also receiving juice from the same batch of paid links that didn't renew have actually lost rankings, quite significantly - but this tough one, that's been over 3 months, has just skyrocketed.

Well if what tony_d just said it true, it won't matter if you wait :| It almost sounds like the "quality links" put pagerank in the negative until your remove them.

Well according to what you guys are reporting, it looks like google has taken another step into encouraging mass spam with low quality costless links.

Just hang on there mate, sometimes ranking dropped with high pr links, then go massively to the top, give it few weeks before panicking

Tony is saying though that he waited 90+ days to get his ranks up after posting quality links, and it never went up until he removed the link. If I understood him correctly anyways. It would be interesting to know what is going on there.

Could it be a coincidence , that the day you decided to remove your High prs is the day the algo gave credit to their power ?

I am curious to see what others have to report about high pr links, it does seem like some sites simply stop moving with quality links.

i was replying to the OP's not tony, however regarding tony's website, this could be any number of problem, without seeing the domain, it's hard to give proper advice. It could be over optimisation of the keywords he's trying to rank, if that's the case, the more links you get to the site the lower the over optimised keywords go down.

As i said, it could be anything, without seeing the domain it's hard to tell.

Maybe if a site gets links from a page with too high of PR they work the opposite way?

I think the issue here is that just because a site has decent PR and other DA,Trust Flow, etc metrics does not mean at all that it isn't under a google penalty of some sort. The only way to determine that is if the site is healthily ranking for terms it should be ranking for i.e. titles, headings, etc. If a site with high PR is under penalty and you have a link from that site..... well that can't be a good thing now can it?
