last night, while in bed, I had this brilliant idea (ok, maybe it's actually a dumb idea)

instead of using godaddy auctions domains as a part of a PBN, what if you buy one domain which is old, with good backlinks, good DA, etc, and use it as your money site? I know there might be a problem with niches. Let's say your keyword is "how to get rid of termites" and the godaddy domain used to be about "fast cars" which has nothing to do with termites. I suppose you could create 20 web 2.0s with exact anchor text to "train" the search engines to understand this site is now about termites?

Is my question clear? basically, I am asking what would happen if you buy an old domain with good backlinks, and use it as your money site?

this is one secret weapon to rank fast. don't tell it to anyone!

(seriously)

Yes this works fine and it is a technique that's been here for many years.
I have 4 moneysites on old domains ranking top10.

does the old site have to be in your niche? what can be done about differences in niche? let's say your niche is "how to get rid of termites" and the old site used to be about something unrelated, like "how to get into medical school" would you buy it for this purpose?

Try to keep them within the same niche unless is a brandable domain.

Go with brandable shortname domains where you create shortname.com/keyword

Backlink profile is the most important thing. Don't buy spammed domains.

I have an adsense whose domain expired a long time ago, and there was a site established on it. There were a few existing backlinks, and I did no additional SEO. Entirely an experiment blog.

The site gets a lot more real clicking/converting traffic than expected but it hasn't risen in the SERP yet. It's indexed and has a proper sitemap and robots.

I think the key is as you said, an expired domain with good backlinks. If they are poor, but not venomous, you can attempt a 301 redirect with the domain. Or if the site with the expired URL is a sideproject, and the URL has poor backlinks, give it a test. You never know how things will differ for you, different sites and situations are not equal.

find related expired domains and create several backlinks layers to it
then after a couple of weeks 301 the expired domain to your money site
you will receive all the link juice without risking your money site

why would you 301 redirect expired domain to money site when you can just use expired domain as money site? what is the advantage?

I've been contemplating doing exactly this recently with a PR4 domain that I picked up about 5 years ago and never did anything other than put up a 3 page site. It's in a good niche too so your post just reminded me to do it!

Yes you can rank a money site on an expired domain, it just might take awhile because there is a sandbox period

Although I am going to say something that would go against what everyone else has said above but I think it should be know that success is not always the outcome when expired domains are used as money sites.

This is not an advice from me, but few very reputable SEO experts who regularly contribute to BHW and also have their own very popular blogs told me that last year that they were NOT able to rank expired domains for some reason and these are the people who are still ranking for terms like payday loan! Btw, I am no expert however this is consistent with what I have noticed with my websites, and few of them had top quality backlinks and in the same niche. So your idea my not be that brilliant after all :D

yes, this is still working but you need to check the backlink profile of the domain. You may get a domain with high DA/PA that is actually spammed to death. It is pretty easy to boost PA/DA... just blast the hell out of it with spam and you are ready...

TheGamer is right, this does not always work. You need to make sure you check the backlink profile above everything else.

You need to make sure the domains has not been used my an SEO before and been slapped. I have dont this many times and can spot an SEO'd domain a mile off. I don't care how good the metrics are, if the links tell you otherwise, move on to the next domain.

That said, it does give you a nice bump in the SERPs if used along side a nice PBN and great On Page SEO.

It depends on how "big" you're going.

If the site you're building is in the same niche and looks like a "plausible" continuation of the original domain you should be fine.

However if you're chasing "big" keywords, your site will fail a manual review.

This happened to me and my site got plowed, but I was also #2 for a 300,000 exact search term soooooo yah it depends I guess. :)

So your saying if I use and expired domain as my money site and I get to much traffic my site will get plowed?

Please connect the dots for me on this one. I mean people every day buy domains, rank them via whatever means they do and your saying if its a expired domain that = plow?

OP ignore this nonsense ^^^^

Heres the real answer.

  1. Expired domains loses all "age" because the domain resets, hence being expired.
  2. Domains with good back links are helpful in many different ways niche related or not. If you have a expired domain that has a few BBC, NYT, DMOZ links then who cares what niche its in, it is helpful.
  3. Domains with spammy back links are obviously bad. Check for links for bad anchor % usage, sex links, links from link farms, blatant xrummer, or scrapebox spam, esc...
  4. Check the domains past life. If it was in a PBN dont use it. Use common sense here, if it was a bad site let it go.

Couple tips
  1. Go for godaddy closeout auctions, they keep age.
  2. Ignore EMDs in either expired or close out.
  3. Not all backlinks show up, some people hide their PBNs very well.

In the end its always a gamble, you never really know who had your domain before you. It could of been good ol' susui q white hat web page maker, building honest old pristine white hat back blinks, that glimmer white like little bright stars of pureness. or dangerous darren blackest of black hat sex backlinks herpin up your new domain with hidden sex PBN backlinks.

Well that was a good tip though how to find who owned that expired domain and hidden backlink profile in the end?

Ok bro let me "connect the dots for you" because you missed the point. We are talking about big money keywords here, not shitty affiliate review keywords.

Buying an expired domain to use as a money site is not a new tactic.

However Google does not want you to "piggy back" a site's authority that you didn't earn for some shitty affiliate site.

For example the site I used was a domain from 1998 in the finance niche. It had great backlinks and was a PR4 and I picked it up for a good price.

I built a site closely related to what the original site was about (not same topic, but another sector of finance), and in a few months this site is getting 3500-4000 hits a day (finance $$$ keywords) from Google and making thousands a month.

Few months later I got a manual review and the site was de-indexed. I know it wasn't from the link building, content, or anything like that because I build all my sites in the same way. I just propped a site up on an expired domain and failed the review. They saw I was piggybacking this previous owner's domain authority to build an affiliate site, and they clearly saw that it wasn't the same site. Mind you not an "unnatural link notice" but a straight removal from the Google index.

The point is if you're chasing small keywords like "XXXX review" or anything under 100,000 exact match using an expired domain will probably be fine.

But you need to reconsider if you're gonna go "big" by building a site on an expired domain, because if it starts generating a lot of income, you're gonna get manually reviewed, and they might smack you if they see you're just piggybacking the backlinks of an expired domain.

So I'm not saying buying an expired domain will lead you to getting smacked, but you better be damn sure it looks legit if you're going to invest big $$$ into content, linkbuilding etc. as later it may turn out to be a liability rather than if you had just built a legit site from scratch.
