I was wondering - when Google calculates the position of your site, does it only use the links that are shown in GMWT -> search traffic -> links to your site or it uses all the sites/links that are crawled (and therefore indexed)?

Google don't use only links to determine a position. There is over 100 things they look at.
* Usability
* Traffic
* Content
* Links

Just to mention a few.

Ugh, okay guys, I understand what you mean, but let's talk about the links for the moment...

Links shown in GWMT vs. all the links that exist (and eventually are already indexed, but now shown in GWMT)

Google don't count all links.

No. The links shown in GWMT are a selection of the links which they know about. They're not an exhausted list of all the links which they know and count.

I'm pretty sure they don't count all links - let's say we have some really old web directory, that became a super farm link. Well, they won't penalize you for having a link there, because it was something natural to do back then (maybe even encouraged by Google, cus it's easier to crawl web when you have these hubs full of sites) but now they simply de-index these site or simply don't count them, because they have no relevancy.

But in these topic Im talking about cases like this - almost two months ago I built (okay, bought, but don't tell nobody) a do follow link from a rather good site and the article/text/link was indexed in day or two, but it's been added to GMWT only during these past few days.

In fact, Webmaster Tools console will not show you absolutely every link to your site. Even if some of your links got indexed, you may not find them in GMWT.

Also, (as the guys here said) when determining your site rankings, Google may use more than 200 different SEO factors. On top of that, each indexed backlinks is also assessed against a wide spectrum of ranking criteria, so it may or may not contribute to your site better rankings.

I'm not sure, but I bet they do.

or

maybe you work for Google and you know for sure.

Hey man you high or what? He is right Google only counts those backlinks that its spiders have indexed. So every link you make will not be counted.

Hey OP,

As others have said, GMT does not show all the links to your site, only a small fraction.

To get a rough idea of your backlink profile use ahrefs or majestic. It will list all the links that are indexed in google.

I not high, how`bout you? Do you think the spiders won't find each and every one of your links sooner or later?
