Running a Red Light Penalty?

So earlier this morning, I "ran" a red light. Supposedly I did so, even though me and three other friends in the car swore it didn't happen. Plus, I'm pretty sure the guy was trying to meet a quota or something because he just pulled some other person over again about 10-15mins after I left.

My question is, what's the penalty of this ticket?

I ran one red light before but the ticket was sent to my house, so that was just a fine and I got no points or anything on my record.

I have no interest in going to court to contest this $85 ticket even though I'll probably win, so I'd prefer to just plead guilty and pay the ticket. To be more precise about my question, what I'm mainly wondering is, will I get points on my license for this? I'd rather just pay the $85 penalty fee and call it a day, but if I actually get points on my license I'd rather just go in and contest it instead of paying the higher insurance rates.

Edit: This happened in Newark, NJ by the way if that helps.

It is a mistake to pay a fee or plea not guilty.

The way fines are set up is to encourage paying the fine rather than fighting the ticket by setting the fine below the lost pay for the time in court. Tickets are mostly a revenue scheme by the city.

I would fight the ticket. Cop would probably not show up.

The cop might not show up, but I don't want to waste the entire day just for an $85 ticket. I'd rather just pay it and get it over with instead of spending hours in court. Besides, I have class the day my thing is scheduled.

The only reason I would fight the ticket is if I would get two points, but that's the thing I'm not sure about. You can just plead guilty, pay the $85 fine and call it a day, but the thing I want to know is would you still get the two points that way?

Should I just call the court to be sure?
 
Why would you trust the answer from some random person posting in here vs just picking up the phone and calling the court as you suggested above? You do realize just about no one here knows even your approx location - and those of us that can narrow it down, generally don't unless there's a reason to. aka, too little info about the circumstances and even with all the info, someone posting on here could just be absolutely wrong.

So, if you want to be sure, make the call - at least that's the way I see it.

Yeah, that actually just occurred to me when I realized they put the court number on the back of my ticket and I posted it...haha having a slow day I suppose :/

Before I realized this, I was just wondering if anybody knew what happened, just in case.

Oh well, I suppose this is the best thing I could do, thanks!
 
$85??? Dude just pay it. In Australia if you run a red light the fine is massive.
 
Do I get points on my license? In no case shall motor vehicle points or automobile insurance eligibility points pursuant to section 26 of P.L.1990, c.8 (C.17:33B-14) be assessed against any person for a violation occurring under the provisions of this act. The ticket for a violation of New Jersey Title 39:4-81, Failure to Observe Signal is the responsibility of the registered owner of the vehicle.

Yeah, the money isn't an issue. The only issue is the two points which may increase my insurance rates.

Thanks! So I guess it's safe to assume that I don't get any points?

I found this site earlier, but the more sites I looked, the more answers I got that were different. I suppose it's because like half of them were lawyer sites that were trying to fuck with you to get you to call them.
 
Basically when you "run a red light" it just means that when there was a yellow light turning to a red light you just zoomed passed it in time just to get to the other side. Most of the times a cop or a security camera flashes and takes a picture of your license plate and all. Though I'm not particularly sure, you may lose a point or so on your drivers license. You can either plead guilty for the ticket or pay for it and "get away"
 
if i were you i would fight it! thats 85$ in your pocket if your innocent!

While I agree with your conclusion, that random guy has seen more 5-0 and insides of court rooms, if he never got into trouble again, than you will on your dieing day.

What I tell is personal experience. If you choose not believe me on never pleading guilty, you can check with your local ACLU and consider that 98 percent of people doing jail or prison time pled guilty.
 
The policeman may not display up, but I do not need to squander the whole day simply for an $85 ticket. I'd rather only pay it and get it over with-instead of spending hours in tribunal. Moreover, I've course the day my point is planned.

Yeah, I have no interest in going to court for only $85, the only issue is the points that may or may not be added.

I called the court this morning, but apparently it takes 7 days for my ticket to even be registered into their system?
 
If no points are assessed, just pay the fine and get it over with.

If points might be assessed, use an efficient attorney service such as Ticket Clinic (who operate everywhere), who will fight the ticket for you in court for approximately $60-80. If they win (which they almost always do), you don't get any points assessed and the ticket gets dismissed (i.,e. it does not go on your record).
 
lol newark cops are assholes & their court system is a pain, I would just pay the ticket & just move on.
