assuming you could fix them, you might be able to make some money.

Keep in mind, some you buy may be beyond the point of fixing.
You have to pay to ship the broken one to you, then you need to pay shipping to send it back out.
Technology goes down in price fast, if you cannot sell it, it will become valueless quick.

The only thing you need to know, is what you can buy them for, how much it will cost to fix them, how much charges you will pay eBay, and what your profit will be. As for broken screens, broken screens tend to cost near enough as much to replace as the average phone costs, that is why people bin them.

eBay is a risk for working electronic issues. I can't imagine how this risk could increase with broken ones.

Better try yard sales, flea markets, second hand stores or inserting a free ad in local magazines or websites.

If you insist in eBay, try to buy as local as possible for checking the stuff in person.

As long as you can make a profit after buying the broken item and the new hardware, then go for it.
If you want a venue to dodge the shipping fees when you're selling, you can list them on classifieds sites like Craigslist.

Make sure you know your profit before you buy. Source your supplies directly from china to save some cash if you don't mind cheap quality, aliexpress is pretty good for this. I see "name brand" parts on there all the time for iphone, xbox, etc.

As everyone has pointed out, do your due diligence. Understand your margins and as rockwell pointed out, use as many direct sources as you can. Sometimes if you buy in bulk they'll discount your shipping. As long as you know your numbers, you can determine whether it will work out for you.

Keep in mind, too, that not everyone will be honest in their listings, or might not know everything that's wrong with a device. You might have situations come up where it's nearly impossible to profit off a device. If you already know enough about it, or put in the time to learn, you might be able to use those as part sources.

Ok, you picked my interest. How did you learn how to do it? Do you have any favorite tutorials? Any soldering involved or is it all plug and go? As someone who is hardware and smartphone illiterate this sounds very interesting but scary.

I was making about $100 a day until I lost my supplier who said he was a GM at a Verizon Store. One of the phones he sold me had a bad IMEI and was apearently stolen before it even left the store for shipping? It is honestly kind of sketchy, you meet some cool people though. Requires about 6 hours a day just sitting on Craigslist doing nothing waiting for a phone to be priced right and lots of negotiating. I didn't really deal with broken phones however. I am thinking about getting back into it but requires so much driving and time it is almost not worth it. You'll find that you are almost always scrolling through Craigslist on your phone and you have to be ready to meet people at a moments notice. Not to mention that 80% of the people on Craigslist who are selling used electronics are complete sketch balls.

There's definitely money to be made doing it, but you need to make sure you know what you're doing - the sort of people who list broken electronics on eBay are the sort of people that would have the ability to try the relatively easy fixes-

so you'll often find there will be complicated faults to resolve.

no ebay!!! make free ad at local market or fb that you're fixing broken devices and earn extra $$$... no shipping and extra costs... Much easier and faster income...
