Outernet is going to replace it.

The company plans to beam free Wi-fi to every person on Earth from space. Using something known as datacasting technology, which involves sending data over wide radio waves, the New York-based company says they'll be able to broadcast the Internet around the world.

The group is hoping to raise tens of millions of dollars in donations to get the project on the road.

Donations are accepted on the company's website: https://www.outernet.is/

Only obstacle I see is funding, and possible kickback from established internet providers (Comcast) who have vast resources and a lot to lose, so I don't expect them to sit idly by if this proves to be a viable project

I don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon.

I don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon.

They claim June 2015 will be the launch date, but even if they are late, it looks simple enough to be deployed in the next 5 years.

sounds bad,
more spam more new users, and it will probably be such weak wifi that it will take too much loading sites :P

they're really going to fry us with radio waves ^^,

How will they handle IP ranges or will everyone have the same IP like on a router?

As I understand, the initial stage (ending June 2015) will create something alike satellite TV broadcast. E.q. they will transmit news, educational info, Bitcoin blockchain, etc, in the same way TV channels are transmitted. IPs will stay the same as they are now for those sites transmitted. So technically you wouldn't feel the difference when downloading data.

Next, they plan to make it two-way. I have no idea how they are going to achieve that.

I wonder how this will turn out. I hope they receive enough funding to be able to launch this project. I love how people think of stuff like this, who knows, maybe one day there will be a free way to receive internet at last. I just hope it has enough power to allow users to maintain decent speeds.

I gues Edward Snowden exposed many giants from google to facebook and many more for giving access to all sort of data to NSA AND GCHQ. Spying agencies thinks provide free internet to all the people in the world is favour to human being but in fact they want to control each and every human being on this planet and in comming years they will be teaching internet to othere animals so they can control them as well.

I guess will be at the beginning of the end of having healthy lives
