Alright, I have a legal white hat site that sells merchandise. I do pretty well for myself. I am usually on the cutting edge of SEO and I spend almost all of my time immersed in the white hat stuff. Beating people down through google is fun...

I have a competitor who is doing some weird blogging. I cant find links back to his site

but the descriptions, pictures, and names all confirm that it is him. He is throwing up TONS of these blogs - all with no outbound links that I can find - what the heck is the purpose of this? Is this his attempt at SEO and he doesnt know what he is doing...or have I missed something? I do know he isnt an SEO whiz....

is bewild his site or yours? im seeing over a 1000+ backlinks to this site...

although that blog links back to itself and not to anywhere where you can buy the merchandise... not the suggested merchandise as indicated on the buttons... which is strange... unless hes in the middle of setting the blog up...

thats true about se's loving blogs but the blog winterraven shows the buy now buttons didnt go to to a page you could actually buy anything it just linked to itself? there doesnt seem much point in doing that a visitor then has no way of buying the merchandise???

that is his site and his blog.

i just dont understand what he is doing....and why. there are a lot of blogs exactly like this, same autoblog style text and useless links that go no where from him.

It doesnt seem like he has grasped the concept of this yet...but maybe I am missing something...

He is cloaking - a person see's something different than the search engines.... you see no links. Google sees links.

OK, I understand this - but I was under the impression that google was well defended against cloaking like this? Basically...I thought this was pretty outdated stuff...

You are right in saying that Google is well defended against cloaking. In my opinion, your competitor will only see a short benefit in doing cloaking. He will get any long term benefits by cloaking.

cloaking is effective until google checks with an unmarked bot once they do a comparison check it's very east to detect cloaked sites...

...There are how ever a large number of tricks you can pull to detect unmarked bots and evade detection. As well as certain things you can do to evade manually detection.

In the footer he has 8 links to all different sites, so he's possibly using a link exchange like atchy where he sends 8 links out on this site and gets 8 in return to his money site. By cloaking the pages he's trying to hide his tracks (he should of removed the cache though).

Maybe he got tip off about this post..when he is doing a backlink check for his 'blogs' and saw that one of his links are coming from here

4 blog backlinks in march showing... could be anywhere between 4 - 400 blog posts...

he might not even be linking on all of them, just sitting on the domains letting them mature
