How to design a good looking email?

hey everyone, we have been trying to design emails recently that look good in Gmail in particular. Gmail seems to ignore all centre tags and everything goes out of alignment. The emails look okay in OutLook but we haven't tried anything else. Does anyone know how to make them centre in GMail or any other techniques we can use to make good emails?

yeah man I know what you mean gmail are a pain in teh ass I finally just hired someone to make a simple template like I like.

its was funny cause I mainly just use yahoo so i was testing it on yahoo and it looked perfect but then ENTER Gmail.

Did you find a solution to your problems with Gmail? We are still looking because the emails used to work perfectly with our template and now they look like a steaming pile of poop.

I just tested a gmail to myself and centered text came out fine. What are you using to format your emails currently?

I am using Dream weaver, just HTML and CSS.

Can you send me a copy of your email code?

How do I find the code? I just made a test email in my gmail web client, using the built-in formatting. If you're using html, are you creating divs and using styles to align your text? Google uses "text-align:center" on centered text.

Oh okay, I am using HTML and CSS to design the email in dream weaver and then uploading the .zip to MailChimp. We are using text-align:center on the text and align-left:auto + align-right:auto on the images, they just float around like there was no CSS. I think Gmail messed it up and haven't realised because it used to work great and now they ignore allot of CSS.

Yeah i hired someone to get it done for me, and they just took my template i had and stripped it down to teh simplest form.

Why not try specialized email marketing programs instead of Gmail for such purposes?

I am, but most of the recipients on the mailing list are using Gmail.
