I was reading up on auto blog submissions, etc. and saw that people use proxies.
Could you explain in plain language - why? For what purpose? And How?

Why? In short, to maintain anonymity and to be able to do automated activities without the need to stop (change proxy, now you are a different person from a different part of the world, so you will not be blocked).

How? Some programs support proxies, some others don't. Most browsers support proxies, so just put the proxy in your browser and you will be surfing under an IP that belongs to a location different than yours.

Also, Social media sites and other sites will only allow x amount of accounts to be created and/or maintained per ip.

JK dude, we were all new once The guys before me explained it nicely. When you start doing blackhat stuff, you tend to not want people knowing who you are, or what you're doing. Because no normal person needs 30,000 social media accounts for themselves

Not sure about which TPTB you mean, but usually anyone who has something to hide looks suspicious to those around him. The internet is no different. People will judge you.

Proxies come in different flavors. Some are intended to reduce bandwidth, some are intended to hide your identity while identifying themselves as proxies and others, the ones you will want, are fully anonymous. The latter are usually hacked computers when offered for free. Please note that just like your ISP can see unencrypted traffic, so can proxies. Do yourself a favor and read up on them.
