Hi there guys, I've recently just purchased a 3 year plan with HostGator, purchased my first domain (plan to buy more later on), I've just recently bought a theme for the website. This blog/website will be about habits and things we can do to improve our lives. I plan to create unique content and make sure that I publish quality and things people can actually use in their lives.

My only course of action for the website is to write about 1-2 articles per week and then I plan to start working on a E-Book to first distribute as a sample for signing up to the newsletter and then later on use that as a sales to purchase (give it a trial period with recommendations).

Now my question is; what should I focus on/things to do/implement in order to receive traffic?
Any recommendations/tips are highly appreciated!

Thank you! :)

If you are so fresh to blogging there are some popular threads in BHW, giving you a complete guide for your critical start up.. rather than asking random people search for some popular thread here... search box will help you more than others. :)

Well there is lot of stuff to do, if you post article on your site who will know about it. You will have to share it on social media, reach out to bloggers and let them know about it, bookmark it on reedit, stumble etc. Start out reach...:)

Lots and lots of ways! If you google how to drive traffic to my site, you will get hundreds of ways to do it, whether paid or free.

Alright thank you. I will search threads with popularity on BHW under "blogging", thanks!

I see, so essentially you're saying that once I do complete an article; to share it on social media/websites that host articles and social media sites to gain authority

I have just searched that and found multiple blogs/websites offering that. Now it's up to reading.

You could keep the ebook as a free download in exchange for name and email, build your list and bank on that, then it would be economical to use paid traffic and consider it a long term investment.

I was thinking of offering the e-book free with an E-mail sign up so I can build my list. Since I think the e-book will be of high quality and use, I will use/ask for recommendations on the e-book so I can use those to generate a sales page and after a while use it to sell the book.

Social media, submit to blog directories, social media, forums, signatures, social media, twitter, social media, blog commenting on relevant niches, social media, local flyers, and social media.

Think social media would direct the best traffic

Hah! I think I get it. Social media is key; and commenting on blogs (which I will do after social media). I remember seeing a great service on BHW about social media links etc, and it was really amazing. I think once I have over 30+ articles I will purchase that service and start to do commenting. Thank you! :)

It seems so. I will be purchasing that Social Media service, and providing quality content and then I will have traffic.
Thank you both!

The most important thing a blogger can do is network with other bloggers in the niche.

Become well known to them, link to them, share and like and tweet their stuff, write posts about them (10 best blog's / ask an expert type ego bait stuff), talk to them, offer them stuff for free.

Takes time but this stuff pays off as if you're offering them real value and your blog is any good they will do it back for you in time.

You also have to get known to your target audience so get yourself to wherever they are blogs, forums, social media groups and so on and get 'in their face' (in a good way don't annoy or spam them!) by constantly offering good advice, answering their questions, helping them, sharing useful content both your own and others.

Think about guest posting, blog commenting, participating in high value forums with clickable signatures, being active in the big FB groups / Pinterest board / G+ circles etc, active in Reddit groups.

Thanks Stuart. I totally agree. This is why I've decided to have 2 websites. I wish to create 1 website in which only I am writing and sharing my perspective on things and will just purchase social signs alongside; posting my own stuff wherever. I will just get slow and steady traffic; but with time it will build up a large number as I will continue posting quality articles.
My second site is the site where ANYONE can come and post their articles, I will make a large resource page (where I link peoples work etc) and make it kind of a database with a lot of articles; anyone's sites etc. I plan to "whore" that website out to everyone in the niche's talk to them etc and build it to where there are high quality content of articles and sharing.
I just want to keep a balance between the two.

1-2 articles per week isn't a good plan.

Try posting 1-2 articles per day.

You will need a lot of content on your blog in order to obtain traffic from Google. Google loves blogs that are updated daily with new content.

Quality > Quantity. I'm not going to post mediocre content to raise ranking and have a high bounce rate.

quality is relative.

for example, a quick blog post about a new wordpress theme that you really like could be short and sweet, but still a good post.

and on the contrary, you have these long winded nonsense articles laced with hundreds of keywords because someone assumes it will make them rich overnight.

but i 100% agree, good ol fun and quality posts go a lot farther then ones full of oral diarrhea.

well put; i'd rather feel better at the end knowing my contributions were not just to make money ( i have a interest in writing )

1 to 2 articles per week is just fine.

It's hard for most people to post 1 let alone multiple GOOD QUALITY posts every day. Good posts take time.

Putting up a quickly written post of 500 words that has little 'meat' to it and doesn't get in-depth benefits pretty much no one.

You also do not need a lot of content on your blog to obtain traffic from Google or anywhere else. Google loves high quality blogs not just ones that are updated daily.

Most of the really epic blogs in the IM space for example that rank well and have insane followings post less frequently but the quality is epic.
