I had to get a 9-5 job (more like a 7:30 - 5 job) and when I took the job I signed up to be the graphics and web designer.
I leave the house at 6:15 am and dont get home till 6:15 pm, I drive 1 hr 15 min each way. They started me out at $38,000 a yr. Well here is what gets me. I am not only doing my web/graphics job, they also have me helping the "creative director" doing their job. I have never used InDesign until I started this position. They asked me to learn it so I can help the other person get their work completed when I didnt have anything to do. Now grant it, this other person has a degree for what they are doing, but in 2 months I have learned to do the same thing.
Another thing is, the person I share an office with doesnt like to have the lights on, well with them having seniority, I am stuck in an office for 9 1/2 hrs with no light other that my 2 20" monitors and by the end of the day my head is killing me. I have brought it up and they say theres nothing they can do but maybe get me some small desk lamps because the lights will cause a glare on the "creative directors" computer screen.
So what I need advice on is what should I tell them when I go up for my evaluation next week. I dont mind doing my job but I dont get why I am doing someone else's job also and yet I am not getting compensated for it. Also, I can do my job remotely but they dont want to do that for some reason. My computer at work went down and they had to get a replacement, I worked from home for 3 days and got more done in them 3 days then I did working in the office.
What is everyones thoughts on this?
I tried IM for 8 months and I couldnt make enough to support a family and anyone on here who knows me, knows I worked my ass off, I just couldnt find "secret" that made money online. I have also tried freelancing but couldnt get enough work doing that either.
Also let me say that the medium salary for my position in the town I work for is $62,000 a year.
Appreciate anyones insight on this.
