Translating articles: bad idea?

Pardon me for a question that could be considered pretty basic from most of you (I'm trying to catch up!)

Would translate articles from authoritative websites into your own language, make it unique and publish them onto your website be a bad idea? I mean, say that I put a backlink to the original article and specify I translated that: would this help with SEO or is this considered a bad thing from Google (and the other folks)?

Does anyone do that?

i have done that but i used those articles for web 2.0

i translated the english articles to 5-6 languages then retrieved the final one to English..The final article is unique and pass copyscape..use this article for generating backlinks...

I do it all the time and works great, just make sure you don't use Google automatic Translator and make the articles as unique as possible, in case they decide to check for multiple language duplicated content in the future. I don't think it will ever happen but it is better to be safe than sorry

it's super easy for shit like list type posts...

find two articles that are "top seven dieting mistakes", compose one "top ten dieting mistakes" where you just mash stuff from those articles. say in the end that (6px cursive gray font ofc) that inspired by this and that.

boom good content and demands no brains to come up with it.

read somewhere google keep track of translate article with google translate (could be a crappy wso or a good training, really not sure)

so better use bing translator

I think if it is unique there will not be a problem but translate yourself (do not use automatic translator) and add a few sentences belong to you.

There was a method thread on this that many people tried, it works and if you rewrite the articles well you could make money.

Translating with Bing translator will work well I think, but you need to edit it a bit.

The thing is, is it a good idea in the long run to build authority in my niche?

After all you will be a blog that is translating other blogs...not really a content producer.

If you're translating manually, it could be a good idea. However, if you're using a translation service, the subtle nuances of language will not be translated properly. For native speakers, it will read as a foreigner trying to come off as a native speaker and google will pick it up as junk content. It's basically the same as poorly written, spun, or computer generated content.

This is not the best thing you should do because it is an old method to create unique content now. But If you are doing this only for link building purpose that will still work.
