PHPBUILT's Idiot-Proof Guide to Authority Site Building

And now I got my first 50$ day with my new site -- built after this thread! Not much, compared to what other guys in here make, but it means that what I'm doing is working, and it's just about scaling it up.

Now my long-term goal is to get this consistent every day (which would cover my rent).

Motivation boost.

I am just about to launch my second site, which I will monetize with CPA. This is a niche where I have plenty of contacts, and plan to do some offline marketing too. Can't wait!

Nice job man! Just to inspire other members to succeed as you did you could post some proofs of your revenue? Just a thought and keep up the good work!

php, what's your opinion about "Text/HTML ratio" factor? thanks

Amazing guide. I have read every page in this thread and I cannot wait for your next guide on free blogs or blog networks. Will you be writing about web 2.0s too?

I have a question regarding over-optimization...i have website where my main keywords are "facebook likes" "facebook friends" etc...
How many % in keyword density is good to have for those keywords per page(i have home page+7 categories), and also keywords such as buy facebook likes...etc etc
How much is good for Google and serps. Thanks a lot!

The answer is in the OP and you should probably go ahead and read this as it seems you did not.....

I've read it completely...but i'm asking since i bought seo campaing for more than 90 keywords, and they are doing a lot of anchor texts to "click here" etc..and some are going to "buy facebook likes" for example, and also i'm doing a lot of buffer sites, so very few are direct linking to urls(20% or so)
I use web2.0 for that and Private network links.
So i want to know is diversity in 1000 words article i have on each page? Like from 1000 words i need to have 1-.1.5% density for buy facebook likes, but what about the other keywords? because i'm doing as i sad for a lot? Do i need to have all keywords on on page somewhere in website articles(website pages) or?
Thanks

What should I do with pages such as Privacy policy that are automatically generated by privacy policy generator? Should I noindex and nofollow them?

I would like to start of by thanking you creating this informative thread. You make it quite clear how EASY it is to run into over-optimization penalty and how important it is to avoid it. However, it seems like most of it is directed at making an authority sites created through wordpress usually intended for residual income through means such as Adsense.

I have not seen any posts related to executing your strategies with an e-commerce site (apologize if I have somehow missed this.) I am currently creating an e-commerce store using Shopify platform and definitely now have a better understanding of what I should be doing with my articles/blog-posts. My main concern is how I can avoid over-optimization penalties on my home page as well as product pages.

Let says for example my store is selling "Dog toys". On my home page, I will have a bunch of the featured dog toys on there so it would something like this:

"Recently Purchased Dog Toys"
| Galaxy Portable Dog Toy | Blazing Dog Toy | Extreme Stand-still Dog Toy | etc...

" Newest Dog Toys "

| Xs Dog Toy Pro | Loko Moving Dog Toy | etc...

The home page will also have a main menu that links to other pages featuring different types of dog toys. So the menu will be something like this:

| Home-made Dog Toys | Portable Dog Toys | Stand Still Dog Toys |

then those categories will have all sorts of dog-toy products when you go to that specific page.

After reading your guide, I am extremely worried about over-optimization penalty and that I would be hit for "dog toy". I would like know what you recommend would be the best thing to do to avoid getting hit with the penalty. The obvious thing would be to take "dog toy" out whenever I can. However, all of the brands I am selling have the main or related keyword in it and basically my whole entire site is about selling this one type of product (with 3 sub-categories) so it seems a little difficult to do that.

Also, my shipping and return policy are going to be duplicate content from another site. Is it ok to just no-index these pages or is important that these be made unique?

Thank you taking the time read this and any advice you have to offer.

My apologies if I missed this in the thread, I looked for it.
You check your keyword density with the firefox plugin (which I have) and that works great. But I'm looking at the page source (using Wordpress) and it pretty much doubles the density due to the meta tags, meta keyword, title and in my case some feeds and whatnot.
Does Google take the source info into account, or only what the web browser displays (and what the KW density add-on shows)?

All right, here we go. I have a site up with 17 articles indexed. The domain is almost a year old. Out of those 17 posts only two keywords are ranking in the top 200. One is at #1 and the other is at #31. The others are not even on the radar

I've tweaked and tweaked the other articles, and they're all from 0.7-1.3% density for 2-3 word phrases).
At least 11 of the articles are original so dupe content is not an issue. The others I rewrote so that they are not at all dupe either.
Keywords in the titles are mixed so it's not inline as PhpBuilt suggested (Red car is big vs Big red car).

I just cannot seem to get those other 15 to rank in the top 200 no matter what I do. So I'm looking at settings, what makes those rank vs why the others are not ranking? Just stymied. I've followed the thread closely and believe I've adhered to the principles.

On another site I tried an experiment and ranked three original articles in the top 10 with the exact same keywords with no backlinks, and completely unrelated to the niche in question.

I'm certainly liking the teaching on this because it just makes sense, but these articles are puzzling me.

I just ran the keywords through Scrapebox's competition finder:

3,630,000
191,000
47,000
640,000
2,150,000
166,000
254,000
74,800
545,000
435,000
367,000
1,030,000
120,000
43,800 #31
701,000
36,600 #1
452,000

I also ran that other keyword through it (one where I ranked 3 articles in the top 10) and it had 303,000 for the Google competition. Go figure.

Thoughts anyone? phpbuilt? What am I missing? Thanks.

My earningsare just a Clickbank screen shot with a few sales ... I will post earnings, along with traffic, when I have more data and have a consistent trend. I have little organic traffic, a lot of it comes from Twitter and direct ( youtube, blogs, news ... you name it).

I'm having problems ranking my articles too. I find them when running the site:xxxx.com, but they won't show up for my targeted KWs -- even sites which doesn't seem to be targeted will show up.

- I typically will have 0.3-0.5% in title tag
- 0.5-1% in body for a 3-4 word KW
- No stuffing in H tags, but there might be a few % All natural looking
- KW in image title, and alt tag. Usually one image per post.

No anchor back links. Length from 600-1000 words.

Tried tweaking them, but same results. I even tried to sprinkle some more KWs in some posts -- as they were in the results when googling the URL but not for their targeted KW.

KW: How to quit smoking

For instance, my title might be "How to quit smoking -- mysite'

Post H1: 'How to quit smoking -- 7 tips towards a healthier life today', same as my H1

My h2s might be 'Change the cigarette with a carrot', 'Write a diary' ... i.e. not stuffed.

My URL for the particular pot would be mysite com /how-to-quit-smoking
________-

I read through the thread a second time now, so I'm not asking to be spoon fed. I was just wondering what the ideal KW distribution, if there is such a thing (or at least a range), for title; H1; body and total, if I were to run very little backlinking, and rely on a backlink profile of social sharing and a few not-exact links from my 2.0s

My writing should be fine, and I'm getting social traffic along with comments ... That's how I've made sales, but so far I've only had a couple of UVs per day from organic SE traffic.

Oh fuck, I actually made 3 sales today ... My Clickbank wouldn't update ... But I think they're all from direct traffic. The thing is, I'm just finishing off a lot of my posts at different places with my brand name, not my url. I have good direct traffic (people manually googling my brand, or writing in my dotcom), but my organic traffic from KWs is shit.

For example if my keyword is "get tall", it includes some silimar keywords like "grow tall" or not? I think now google consider get tall same as grow tall, now the density is two keywords' density or not.

No single word should be above 2% density, so if focusing on those 2 similar keywords pushed grow to over 2% density you have to find a way to cut it down.

Second... what do you think about -900 or the "end of result" penalty? Is this a OOP penalty? I have two websites sitting on the last pages of SERP for every keyword, even for the domain name.

2 types of penalties.

Manual -- very rare. This happened with BMR, recently happened with Anglo Ranks ... on an individual basis it probably happens sometimes too but its very hard to find a manual penalty. These come lately from participating in public blog networks.

Second type is the type 99% of people experience. It is entirely overoptimization. Overoptimization has been around since 2008 for keyword density on page alone, and whenever there's a new algorithm change that people drop out of the serps, it typically means the overotpimization specifications of Google got just a little bit tighter. The massive google updates since early 2012 have been on incoming links for overoptimization as well.

Haven't seen an overoptimization penalty you can't get out of. If its onpage seo, just stop stuffing. If its too many exact incoming anchors, just built more links that are not exact anchors.

Can someone explain this part? how can one page focus on 500 keywords? I don;t understand those numbers...

500 exact ... you should target keywords that have 500 exact (not broad) searches in Google each month.

Is the Meta description on a WordPress site beneficial to help with site ranking, article ranking or both? :-) Thanks!

Meta description is important for clickthrough. If there isn't one, Google will generate their own so either way its not that big a deal. Google says it doesn't use meta description in ranking your page.

php, what's your opinion about "Text/HTML ratio" factor? thanks

Some wordpress themes are ridiculous for the amount of text they injext for html. I don't like it, but I don't usually treat it unless I've fixed everything else and its still not ranking. If you have the option, move css and js to external files.

One thing you have to be careful of is drop down menu texts. Google considers it keyword stuffing ... and Quirk Searchstatus doesn't find it. Don't use drop down navigational menus unless you're prepared to be responsible for every keyword in it being attributed to the page's SEO and the overoptimization it could cause.

i have website where my main keywords are "facebook likes" "facebook friends" etc...
How many % in keyword density is good to have for those keywords per page

2 keyword combos you should keep at 1.5% or less keyword density according to Quirk Searchstatus firefox plugin. All single-word keywords on the page should not exceed 2% density, so if somehow facebook exceeded that amount targeting both the keywords that have facebook in it, you'd need to reduce some of them even more.

What should I do with pages such as Privacy policy that are automatically generated by privacy policy generator? Should I noindex and nofollow them?

These are important pages to have. I believe Google looks for them and if you have them, its gives an ever-so-slight boost to your overall site's rankings. Keyword density on it is a non-issue, these pages won't rank for anything, and its fine if they don't rank for anything.

I have not seen any posts related to executing your strategies with an e-commerce site

Everything in this guide applies to e-commerce sites. That page most certainly is overotpimized. There's nothing much you can do about it unless you take the densities seriously and modify your pages. I do ecommerce sites as well, but I don't even try to SEO the store. I SEO a blog that leads to the store and thats how I go about it.

99% of the ecommerce sites out there have this issue, so you're not alone.

My apologies if I missed this in the thread, I looked for it.

For the most part, the densities I mentioned take into account that there will be hidden keywords in the html. That's fine. As mentioned above however, drop-down menus can certainly be a problem if the keyword is mentioned repeatedly. Take the dropdown out if this is an issue.

Thoughts anyone? phpbuilt? What am I missing? Thanks.

PM or skype me the site if you want me to look at it.

I'm having problems ranking my articles too.

PM the site if you want me to look at it. Congrats on your sales.

Hey phpbuilt,

I'm facing the same problems as starkcontrast and was wondering if you could have a look at my site too.

PHPBUILT. Thank you very much for an amazing guide. I am completely blown away by the content you have provided and have already started to implement it.

I have a site that was bringing in about $400-$500 per month (in about 5 months from launch). It was my first site and I felt like the king of the wolrd becuase I thought I had something that works! But then tanked, all pages have nearly gone from google. They are indexed but do not rank. The site had abut 300 pages. The is no manual penalty in webmasters tools.

The site disappeared from search on 4th Sep, which seems to coincide with a google update (http://www.seroundtable.com/google-update-17328.html)

Below are the issues I discovered using you guide and the steps I took. I have some questions related to my implementation and if you can shed some light, it will be really helpful.

Issue: Duplicate content on tag pages, categories, author and blog pages (site.com/page/1, site.com/page/2, etc).
Issue: Keyword stuffing in categories, keyword density, navgation
Issue: Some tags pages were getting more traffic then actual articles (and no ads were shown on them!) indicating messed up keyword density.

Resolution: I removed all tags - they were not adding any value to the navigation of the site, dropped all author pages. They were added to increase keyword density in the first place!
Resolution: Dropped several categories that were keyword stuffed, renamed some to things like News, updates, articles, etc.
Resolution: Dropped keywords from footer, from alt text in header, navigation (now only going to home, contact, privacy and blog)
Resolution: Targeting articles one by one to bring keyword density under threshold you mentioned and will take it from there.

Issue: keywords by domain names. I had Partial match domain target e.g. keyword: lightweight bike parts domain: lightweightbikepartssite.com
Issue: 36% links with exact anchor text "lightweight bike parts"
Issue: Links from spammy domains
Resolution: Moved site to new domain (somethign like bikerepairpros.com), Added No index to the original site.

Q1: Will this be counted as duplicate content as the old domain is still alive but set to noindex? Do you know how long it takes for google to deindex them?

Q2: Should I use webmaster tools and deindex pages from the index ( I hear its effective to get a site down in less than 24 hours)

Q3: I want to get rid of the link profile, all links were low quality (non-relevant free directory submissions, bookmarks, spun articles, etc) and limited tired link building GSA). The domain has PR 0 after the recent update :( and only two links have PR on them (PR 1 and PR2). I judged this as a link profile to run from and start from a clean slate. Do you think once the partial match domain was removed, my sites tolerance to exact anchor text would increase and I can 301 the old domain to new domain or do I still run a risk of getting penalized again for keywords in anchor text?

Issue: High bounce rate.
Resolution: Added a widget to the sidebar (across full site, promoting my top articles). The links are image links, so no anchor, are site-wide. This to me seemed similar to the way you promote stores, by adding links in the sidebar. I would want to rank for all those pages I am linking to from the side bar, so I am concerned about having an anchor text in the link. With limited traffic now (only from bing and yahoo) the bounce rate reduced from 85% to 60%.

Q1: Do you think not adding anchor text with keyword was the right move? I am getting a good reduction in bounce rate by this and don't want to mess-up keyword density by having overly optimized anchor text.

General Questions:

Q: I have several pages such as "lightweight bike parts in New York" "lightweight bike parts in California", they were all blog posts. All of them had the same 150 word description and then some listing of where to get the item from bringing they word count to 300+ ion most cases. Some of these were ranking before the update killed them. I feared duplicate content initially and removed the same description from all the pages bringing the page to 150+ words only. No improvement was observed.

Which page is better in your view? From the user standpoint I was giving all the information on one page and was also hitting 300+ words, now I have much smaller word count, the page does not look as good, and is no longer as useful but has no duplicate content. One solution is to add unique descriptions to each page (which may all convey the same thing but written very differently). Do you see this as the only solution or do you think 150 word pages have a chance to rank?

Q: I am also moving these posts to pages as that will further improve the structure of my site (I will use blog post to promote those pages)

Q: I have several topics such has "how to make lightweight bike parts" "How to install lightweight bike parts" where I actually want to target a five to six word keyword!. I typically write a 5000- 700 word article for them. Can you give me keyword density suggestion for this.

My best guess after reading the guidelines for a 500 word article would be as follows.

"How to install lightweight bike parts" - Title in H1 tags (I am assuming this is a 5 word keyword as to would be a stop-word - Is this a correct assumption?) ( I am already at 1% density fro this phrase now)

"lightweight bike parts" mention 1 more time, so over all two occurrence of three word keyword - 1.2% density

"bike parts" 2 more time - 1.6% density

"lightweight parts" - 4 times 1.6% density

I will also keep single word density under 2%.

PHPBUILT. Thank you very much for an amazing guide. I am completely blown away by the content you have provided and have already started to implement it.

I'll respond to this post later today, not enough time now. However, never give your niche away or your domain. You should edit all that post, delete the specifics and PM it to me instead.

Hello again Phpbuilt, i just have one more question...
Using Quirk Plugin, i went to my website and i ran keyword density tool there, and it shows something like this:
Title : 18.2%
Body 5%
H1/h2/h3 3%
Links 10%
Bold 15%
Meta description 6%
Meta keywords: 27%

for my keyword "facebook" for example...and you told me that it should be below 2% density...does that mean that i need to have under 2% for all of those criteria? It should be like this:
Title : 1.8%
Body 1.5%
H1/h2/h3 0.5%
Links 0.5%
Bold 1.5%
Meta description 1%
Meta keywords: 1.5%

So everything should be below 2% or just some of that?I didn't understand that part?
Thanks

PHPBUILT mentioned several times that the 2% for a single word is for the Body value in the SearchStatus FF plugin

PHPBUILT mentioned several times that the 2% for a single word is for the Body value in the SearchStatus FF plugin
is that also for long tail keywords? Such as buy facebook likes for example, is that also for body? And what about other h1/h2/h3, title, bold, links? Should i worry about that also?
Thanks
