Understanding duplicate content and guest posting?

There are many ways to share the same information.
If you mean posting the exact same copy, then yes that would be duplicate content but there isn't necessarily a penalty associated with this.
If you post it on your site and it gets indexed first, usually you will be the one that gets the credit for it. Other copies of the same article found in other places will get thrown into the Supplemental index.

there was a recent video by Matt Cutts saying that duplicate content is not a problem as long it's not spam or blatantly plagiarized. He also mentioned that around 30% of the content in Google is duplicate, something along those lines.

So would adding small changes actually complicate things by having multiple articles competing for indexing, with them all being roughly the exact same text?

If your content is being duplicated and your original content was indexed first, it will be a great source of traffic for you. Like others have said, Matt Cutts has confirmed that it is okay to have content duplicated across the web. Every major resource is bound to link to sources at some point or another.

There are many misunderstanding about the duplicate content and duplicate PAGE. They are not the same thing. It is so clear that the duplicate content is that the content around 70% same will be considered copy. But the Duplicate Page is the meaning that use the SAME HTML way to show the content. So here is the theory about it. Some websites owner scrape the same content to build the website, but google still index them, WHy this happen. Cuz the basic theory is , google read the page use the HTML way, and you can use different way show the same content.

As long as your content is published on your site first, Google search engine will recognise the content to be originated from your site. Nonetheless, if you go on and post some of the exact contents on guest posting and forum, then it will be considered duplicate contents. Hope this clear your doubts.

why would you want to post exactly same copy of your blog post on forums or even on guest posts? even if you do that the other sites on which you post will be linking to your page and will be thrown into supplemental index!

Anything what is published on 2 or more platforms will be considered as a duplicate content.
