It surely works, if you have some bots or software's which you are trying to run 24x7 then you buy VPS
It is just a private computer for you hosted by hosting company usually with high internet connection
You can remotely access it using software, in windows there is built-in software for it
Once you have access you can install any software and start running it like 24x7,
Even if you close terminal from your side your softwares will keep on working

You can get a linux vps for as low as $2-3/month. Windows vps are usually more expensive ($15+/month). Everything depends on what do you want to do with it.

There's a lot of cheap VPS out there. No one is gonna share with you. You're like asking a stranger can you install games in his laptop and play at times.
It's definitely a worthy investment if you need to run SEO tools 24/7 like GSA Search Engine Ranker.

I started buying bhs vps
I had no experience in vhs before
the conection sucks
it's only 200 Mb
it has some good software like senuke ,money submitter and so on BUT if you run only two the pc gets Very but very s-l-o-w
(Like money submitter and no hands seo)
many times they delete your questions when you open a ticket because the server does not work.
They said free proxies , but they only have public proxies that change every hour (only 16 of 1400 passed google and are slow)
Having learnt my lesson, never go for bhs vps
Now I am using Senukexcrvps , the guy answer every single question of mine sometimes within the 15 minutes
I can run senuke, Gsa engine ranker, Gsa Captcha Breaker,Gsa Seo Indexer, No hands seo, no hans pinger , no hands indexer, and Xrumer
and they ALL work fine AT THE SAME TIME
conection is 1Gbit ( I am from argentina my conection here is 6 Mb)
my remote server is a pc with 32 gb ram i7
They have premium private proxies that you can only use on their servers but they rock (they passed google and are fast)
I use those proxies for scrapebox and so on
So I highly reccommend them

VPS: Think of a VPS as a apartment, you're on your own but still have to share living space with others, so what im getting at its your own server no doubt about that, its just manage by its own dedicated server. So i bet i confused you, a vps is a part of a dedicated server broken into groups i.e like an apartment, youre still part of one giant group but have your own section with somewhat dedicated parts.
So unlike a dedicated server you are sharing resources with others on that same server only difference is you have a part of the server to yourself, but its usually limited HDD size and RAM which can prove a problem for large sites.
Or like others said you can run bots or SEO tools from it so you dont bring your pc/laptop to a cripple
