Duplicate Contents ! What does it mean exactly ? Same contents across many pages over a domain or same contents across different domains ?

Well, i have noticed in many post that people and experts has warned about duplicate contents. Even while creating profile in different websites, creating descriptions for social bookmarking etc . I am not including articles here for time being because the texts used in these platforms will be much more less that the ones in articles.

If duplicate content is really a problem for SEO and if sites are getting penalized for sharing the same contents over different domains then how come articles syndication sites are surviving. They even rank better than other sites with the same contents. Well so far as i have learned, google ranks the sites according to many factors where authority is being one great factor.

Also MATT CUTTS says "Duplicate Content Won?t Hurt You, Unless It Is Spammy" which can be seen http://searchengineland.com/googles...tent-wont-hurt-you-unless-it-is-spammy-167459

so do we really have to worried about the same texts being used over different profiles and other platforms ?

Just a thought guys ! Share me what you think

Don't take anything Matt Cutts says literally. His job is to disinform. And often, perhaps by accident(?), misinform. Just look at search results to prove how wrong he is. Either that or Amazon.com, Wikipedia, Trip Advisor and Ebay are his idea of the world's best sites for any query, cuz that's all we see lately.

If you create the exact same content on 2 pages, one of them will not rank. If that content is all over 2 websites, then one of them will not rank. Unless of course you are amazon.com, ebay or about.com in which case any crap you blast online will rank.

Yeah, i know that ... either one of the page gets the priority but duplicate content does not result in penalty. Does it ? one will rank higher the other will rank low.

The one that's not ranking will come out to the forums and say "he's penalized".... It's not a formal penalty, but it is a penalty in the sense that it's not gonna rank.

Duplicate content strictly means Paligarism . You can paligarise for your need and nor you can be do spam.
Yes, if you are using same content over your website to detail something then its a good go but if you are trying to create a single topic and stretch it over to different websites having different puposes then its sappmy as Google doesnt want to show its searchers same result for same queries.

Maybe you will have some answers on this. A competitor website has 7 websites that are more or less duplicates. If you check using copyscape or other tools it shows a duplication rate of 40 to 70%. The big thing is they are #1 in serp and have been for years. But no one can tell my why. There backlinks and web structure does not justify #1. I believe it has something to do with the 7 sites and how they are structured to the main site. I am looking for someone who can really figure this out.

In a nutshell duplicate content issues can arise from having multiple instances of the exact same content on your site. It has nothing to do with using the same content across multiple sites. That's called syndication, and its perfectly OK to do. You can choose to use links and attributes to original source or curate or whatever the hell you want to call it.

In theory google strives to rank the original source above any other copies of the content that have been "syndicated" out across the web. This is why original content is the gold standard, and what you should use on all your money sites. In practice though, many times the whole thing is royaly f3cked and you can have sites that just ripped all their content from other sites rank higher than the original source. So go figure.

Decent answer ! I have noticed lot of people telling that even the profile backlinks you create should have different contents. Practically, this doesn't sound cool.
