Please tell me why I am wrong.
Why this will not work now or Google feels it eventually won't work Because a big part of the algorithm comes from actual human beings paid to check and see just why you suddenly went viral. Thousands and thousands of people are independently contacted to work for a company that has a contract for Google to put an actual human eye to the web. I did this for four weeks, got paid $14/hour to spend up to a minute and a half combing through a site, its links and checking how/where its backlinks were produced. And trust me, when I saw that three links or more from three separate TLDs had been produced within a second of each other, I knew what the deal was. And I didn't even technically work for (or have a contract) with Google. Really Sh**y job. Serious Suck.-
Why I agree, support and say go for what you said: What you just described with why spamming links still actually works too. The fact is that links are the ways that people can actually get to your site. So sending out 100,000 links a day automatically (hosted 24-hour Zennoposter or SENukeCr would be a good start to do this) would soon give millions of ways for your site to be reached, and therefore your traffic would start to go up. And then there's this: if you're mimicking the way something goes viral, wouldn't you be actually creative a viral wave of interest in the process? I am so irritated that if one of us does this it's somehow deserves deindexing or "no Google love," but you are welcome to hire a PR Firm that will do something very similar with the known News Services.
