Recycle content or 301 redirect to new domain?

I wondered what others are doing here when they get a penalty or lose rankings overnight -

Is it a case of de-index individual pages of content by using webmaster tools, and then uploading on a new domain once its been removed from the serps?

OR

Simply 301 the entire domain to a new site and upload the content there?

Does anyone actually try and regain the rankings once lost or just accept defeat and move on?

It depends which of those is in fact the case. If it's a penalty, I ditch the site, knowing that a 301 will flow the penalty (eventually, if not right away).
If it's just a sudden loss of rankings, try to understand why... if no penalty or manual action, then 301'ing is probably a good thing to do.
