Running a record label is a big undertaking. Though I've honestly never been in this business, I'd say that 3-4 record labels that are already out there are running 90% of the business so your budget for management, marketing and continued growth will need to be pretty big. It's not impossible but will take a lot of work and apart from having the right budget, you're going to need to have the right people in place to grow the record label. Anyways, good luck and I hope you're able to see this venture out!

I have been in this business my whole life. If this is a passion, great have fun. There is one thing you must have no matter the budget.

You will make your money in licensing deals for films, TV & video games. Sign bands to 360 deals.

I'll give you some tips to help you spread you music as well as make money from it. Upload your songs on Youtube and monetize the videos. Then purchase views from providers. This will help people hear you music while earning you money. Rinse and repeat.

What's the budget?
if you have $100k+ then it can work it just depends on what your trying to do, and how your trying to market and promote the artist
if your looking for Radio play BDS stations and so on nationwide, well then your budget needs to be at least $500k+
But that goes back to where u plan to promote the artist, are you planning to promote the artist locally, regionally or are you doing a nationwide campaign
then that goes down to what type of music

it all depends on what exactly are your goals and expectation.

Cassette records! A friend of mine is doing that with his partner and have signed japanese artist they sell mainly cassettes and doing video from old archives "hipsta stuff" and promoting through soundcloud , fb, yt and twitter But he makes some money and he enjoys it. He always was a bit deviant in music and managed to do it. They got featured when they reach out to blogs etc... Be creative...

I would assume that the only way to make in this business without running out of money it to hit a jackpot, with an artists that will take a small royalty fee and overnight gets extremely famous. Like that girl lorde from NZ.
