So I thought this would be an interesting discussion and maybe help out people who are new to IM,

Right now if you lost everything you've built online and all of your tools (apart from your PC), but you had $500 to spend, how would you go about rebuilding an IM business?

Personally I would put it into creating a Clickbank product and sales page. Thoughts?

He did say you still have your computer... I would research loads and try to find something that is hot at the moment but yet is needed with in the market.

Computers & skills is enough for me. Can we also assume that we don't have any connections - business, linkedin, family, friends, otherwise? Like, start over from scratch.

I would probably start out by freelancing to earn some more money and get my name out there. At the same time, I would build up a personal webpage to build a brand. Most likely my own name or some other recognizable brand name. So Hosting & Domain fees, plus whatever I value my time, plus living expenses is my ongoing costs. I'd probably spend $20-$50 a night on a hotel room, internet & food. The US is expensive, and I can't buy a plane ticket for that to a cheaper area like Thailand - so maybe I'd think about relocating to Mexico where it's cheaper. I'd then think, yes it's cheaper there - but in the US there are more opportunities.

So where am I at? $5 for tests to qualify/stand out on Odesk/Guru/Freelancer/etc ($15 in total?). Domain = $5 (if I used a good coupon). Hosting for 6 months @ $10 a month. $80 spent, plus say $45 a day in living expenses. After two days, I'm $170 down and not much to show for it, so might as well start up and market a few fiverr gigs as well. Hopefully I'd land a few jobs at maybe $5/hour. Not minimum wage here, but at least it's money IN and not OUT.

The object is of course not to make a bunch of money, but to get my name and brand out there. I'd be willing to do work that is below my "pay grade". The 'goodwill' of the brand is invaluable at this point, so it's something to focus on building. I would create a twitter, facebook, and google+ page as well. Maybe a youtube to document everything. Through all my social media and activity on sites, I'd hope to get some brand recognition and chances at higher paying work.

I would also probably look into temp agencies, to get a steady stream of income coming in. Yes, it's not time focusing on my IM business, but at least I have a roof over my head and food on the table. My primary concerns at this point. Let's say after day 2: $500 in total, minus first two days of expenses at $170 gives me $330 left. Day 3 (lucky day scouring and applying to everything under the sun) brings me in two jobs at $20 a piece which in total take up 12 hours to accomplish, plus writing a blog post and making/editing a video. With living expenses at $45 a day, so I'm out $5 in total or down to $325.

It's a start.

Still more money out than in, but much much less.

Next day, a set back. I had 2 interviews for data entry work. Pays $8/hour, but they were either looking for someone with faster typing speed, or someone of another ethnicity. Money out for train, food, shelter, and time. I'm out $55 today, with nothing to show for it. Brings me down to a total of $270. Shit. I go to bed that night with more resolve to focus on IM more than ever. I'll probably make a BST or Freelancer for hire, because I found this awesome community of global internet marketers. I have the skills, but never heard of them before....

I'm tired and it's late. If anyone is interested in more of this story, let me know.

I'd bring a couple prostitutes to the cheapest hotel I could find.

- Sit in a cafe, buy a drink or two, use their wifi, electric.
- Buy an unlimited Skype package.
- Get some scraping tools from the downloads section
- Contact local leads via Skype and sell them web design/seo/social/reputation management/adwords management/ad design/copywriting
- Buy some smart clothes and some deodorant for any face to face meetings you may have

I would go search for my hard-earned stuff o.0

If this happened to you, I'd start off by looking in the bar.

500$ is more than enough to aquire domain, hosting, and an automated seo tool.

You even will have money after purchasing those.

After that, start building links to your pages and try to rank for several profitable keywords you previously researched( not high competition, and with possibilities to monetize with your favourite method, adsense, cpa, etc)

Write several articles trying to rank more keywords and after several weeks, you will be getting back your money and should reinvest more money in things that will make your business grow.

Even if you want, only purchasing domain and hosting, can do manual seo and will be ranking for low competition keywords in a short period of time, meanwhile you can contact similar bloggers or webmasters and try to get guest posts for free just providing them free article.

Just my 2 cents.

This is a good question. If you were good at SEO, for example, you could buy a new domain, put it on fast hosting, and start ranking for "SEO city" in low competition areas (write 400-500 word articles for each page yourself, make onsite SEO perfect). Would only cost $200-300 depending on the link package you bought, and you could have clients coming in within a few weeks. Actually doing this myself now...

Probably look until a great niche was found and start a PPD site with SEO for it. If not that than maybe do something on fiverr until enough money was gathered for bigger projects.

First - I'm sorry for this truly disgusting formatting, I'm using BoomProxy and I lose all formatting when I make a post. I'd go back to doing what I did years ago when I was in exactly that position - get on the phone and start cold-calling financial services businesses (insurance etc) to sell my cold calling services :) Though back then it wasn't because I'd 'lost everything', just that I'd never had anything :p If you can sell, you'll never be without an asset base for long. Yes, I'd be selling my time, but it's easily >$500 a week for a not that many hours, and I'd still have 60hrs a week to put into what I know makes me money (IM/SEO), *plus* I'm covering all my living costs and my startup costs. This time around, however, I'd be up to >$10k/mth pretty damn quickly, because I 'know it all' already, I don't have the same learning curve to go through. That really proves, I guess, that SEO ability is an asset, because you can leverage it to whatever your mind can think of. I really believe that in this day and age, the only thing that limits our income is our imagination.

I'd get a F#*%#N real job, and start to rebuild.

Anyone who does anything else otherwise is seriously deluding themselves.

I started with $200 loan from dad 5-6 years back .
What i would do now :-
step 1 : - buy either CS or CB + $13 pack of Dbc + some semi private proxies

step 2 : - choose any ppd niche , use uber suggest to find long tails , then check in adwords planner . In the end hope to find 10 keywords .

step 3:- make 10 videos related to keywords upload to atleast 10 websites (100 total)

step 4 &5&6:- Beat the shit out of all trial softwares available :- Both link building & content generators , hoping to make atleast 1-5 K backlinks to them . also buy some video ranking service + social share service over here + few manual tier 1 to website (but i think they wont stick due to the niche)

step 7:- Buy Gsa Ser or scrapebox , spam the hell out of links built from trial software's

step 8 :- wait for traffic & money

Edit:-
Forgot to add domain , but blogspot would do as i am sort of money .

I dig this thread, there are some great methods in here for the newbie with only a bit of investment (:

Actually I am !

In order to answer the question of OP - I think like lafours said, is a good start and can bring defintely needed money immediatly to your bank account, since all other money sources like Adsense, Clickbank etc. take way too long in your imaginary scenario situation in there we are in. So only way for super short term money might freelancer work and a "normal" job and work each free hour you have on IM to get your empire back.
