Ideal backlink strategy for aged domain with no backlinks

I'm stepping out of my comfort zone of PPC and starting my first SEO project. I wanted to build off an aged domain/site and purchased a 6 year old finance site with a PR4, but the site has been stagnant for years until I recently added a ton of quality content.

I'm new to SEO and don't understand how many links should be going to inside pages and how many should be going to the homepage? Do homepage backlinks affect the ranking of inside pages if those same inside pages have no backlinks of their own? Or does every inside page need their own incoming links to rank high in the serps?

Hmmm. You said in the subject that there's no backlinks, but then you said it's PR4. Which is it? Because a domain can't be PR4 with 0 baclinks.

If it has no backlinks and its 6 years old, then you can start off semi-aggressive, but it's a good domain to try and stick to good web 2.0 properties and profiles with non-spun content. Also add the site to the top bookmarking sites (you can find some lists around here). Do-Follow wikis with actual good content never let me down.

Other than that, guest blogging as much as you can for good sites. This approach takes time and work but builds a solid foundation if you're looking for long term results.

Yes I realized the contradiction of my wording when I said "no backlinks / PR4" afterwards. I meant to say no new backlinks, as in no new backlinks in over 4 years. It has a few strong incoming links which gives it the PR4, but little to no traffic is resulting from these old links and the content has been left unmaintained for about 5 years until about a month ago when I started adding a ton of new content. Thanks for the advice, but how about links for my homepage as opposed to links for inside pages? Will inside pages rank based on the homepage's incoming links, or does each an every inside page need to be directly linked to in order to rank high?

Strong home pages should help all the pages attached by a little.

As to link building - If you want to create an authority site build the links the authority site would have. Try to contact the other site owners and ask for guest posts, but prepare to provide with good quality content since it can be rejected. If you succeed and the blog accepts it, you not only have the blog post published, but also a long-lasting relationship with the other site owner. Thus, you later provide a guest post submission service and re-invest the money again.
As Heisenberg wold say - you are building the empire not the web creation business, so be smart, don't take shortcuts and you may end up with a asset you can sell and make profit.

you can link every pages including home page
