I just registered an old expired domain from 2001 with 17k backlinks. The problem i noticed is that this was an old stat counter website and there are many instances of the code in hundreds of domains but the images are broken, how can i make use of this links ?

Since this was an expired domain from 2001 I'd be more interested to know how many of those 17,000 links are still valid.

thats a good question.. how can i see if they are still valid? just setup the website and wait for the better?

ahrefs.com can do this too, it's free for at least one use per day, or signup for the free plan and they give you 5 searches daily.

You can also try webmeup.com/tools/backlinks.html

Assume that the old links are still valid, you can set web server Error Document to render the stuffs that you want (instead of letting it render 404 Not Found).

i get External Backlinks 44,042 using majestic 155k in the last 5 years.

It's probably leftover from a churn 'n burn project. 155k backlinks is quite a lot. if it's legitimate, then by all means give it a try and see.

I am rebuilding websites of expiring domains, send me PM with the domain and will tell you my opinion.

its legit.. all links created by users.. it was an old site that gave code for website visit counters.

You can also try installing the Wordpress plug-in Link Juice Keeper which redirects all the 404 errors back to the homepage.
