What to use while doing SEO http:// or www ?

what should i have to use while doing SEO and building backlinks for my website- http:** example*.com or www*example*.com?
I?ve come to learn that search engine see http://www.example.com, example.com,http://www.example.com/, http://www.Example.com, etc as multiple pages with SEO-killing duplicate content and its not good for ranking.
I would like to hear your thoughts.

I don't see much of a difference in terms of overall strength when comparing www and http. I'd be interested to hear if anybody else has had a different experience.

You can build links to either one. Just choose how you want your site indexed (with or without www) and then build links to that version. If using Wordpress you can specify which one you want in site address. The rest you are over thinking and no issues to worry about there.

If you are talking about anchor text, use the www. If you are leaving a link, it will not be clickable unless you use the "http://"

it's just about keeping things looking natural - remember the links you build are meant to look like they are being made by 10's or 100's or 1000's of different people, and it would be very unnatural if every single link was http:// or http://www

About 3 years ago I switched a lot of my sites over to WordPress Mu networks. The downside to this was the fact that WordPress follows the no-www org movement. This didn't seem like much of an issue -BUT AT THE TIME- I noticed a few of the sites in the SERPS bounce all over the place! 2 important sites vanished off of the front page were holding solid standings.

To quickly remedy this, I merely just edited WP core and found where WordPress Mu removes 'www' but once in a while I'd run into redirect loops and had to add it back to access certain dashboard pages.

From that point forward, all link building excluded www

Honestly before I noticed this, it had only been 3 weeks but didn't see rankings regain. Waited a few days and panicked after thinking how fucked it would have been if the sites was sandboxed.

This may not apply now adays, but my general rule of thumb "www is deprecated." - I never include w's since it's pointless.

It does not matter really. Just don't forget to do 301 redirect from www to no-www or vice versa.
If you create a private satellite sites network, do some with www and other without.
