Hey BHW-ers!

I have a WordPress sports website and it is doing very well, getting popular, making profit etc. However, since I've earned some money off it in the past few months, I decided that I would like to move to another platform..."custom" one. However, I would like to keep my articles since there is over 1000 of them and user database.

Take a look at:
Code:
[URL]http://nbacro.com/[/URL]
Code:
[URL]http://bleacherreport.com/[/URL]

I want my website to look like that, but to be WordPress-like, meaning that the authors still have a control panel where they can easily add articles and that I can also change the website design easily. Basically, I would just "convert" my WP website to the new CMS, keeping the current content.

I know this costs a lot (if it's even possible), but if you can do it, please message me with your price or post here. If you cannot do it but know about price, please let me know also.

Thanks!

Is your blog a wordpressDOTcom or do you host it yourself?

I think the OP just wants to upgrade his template for his blog.

Oh you do? Because the OP's words "I would just "convert" my WP website to the new CMS" were not clear?

Congratulations though, you now have 15 posts.

OP: it is possible, but like Techxan said, it would be a bad idea, the biggest problem being you would likely need to pay a developer to come along if you wanted any small change made. What's wrong with Wordpress, if you don't mind me asking?

It has become too mainstream

On topic: I'd recommend you to stick to Wordpress. My newbie opinion:Wordpress is so customizable and easy to use that I wouldn't even consider switching to a different CMS. Seriously, what's wrong it Wordpress? What do you need to be done and Wordpress in unable to do it?

Yeah, what's wrong with wordpress dude?
P.S, There is probably a way to transfer between the CMSs b...but only within the popular ones I believe, like Joomla and stuff..

Treeofl1:> Relax. No need to piss in the wind. I should have clarified. "I think the OP just wants to upgrade his template for his WORDPRESS blog". He might be using wordpressDOTcom, which would make allot of sense. Telling the OP that it is a "VERY BAD IDEA" is not very helpful either. I am surprised that your busting my balls though. At least i was being constructive.

aspe_heat:> are you using a free wordpressDOTcom blog?

Not really sure what OP wanted to do, custom CMS would cost you a lot!

WP is probably the best CMS for me, and its also good for SEO..just check out Matt Cutts blog, it's running on WP :)

Chill dude lol. From a glance, your post appeared spammy, given your post count.
I happen to know OP runs a successful sports based blog (Yes it is stated in the OP too), and doesn't exactly come across as someone who can't afford a proper standalone website.

The reason I think it's a bad idea, other than the fact that it might end up being expensive, is that WP has the best support as a CMS, and a custom solution may not be secure, or as, for lack of a better word: "well endowed" in terms of plugins and functionality.

To answer OP's question in terms of pricing, I'd expect the developer to charge an hourly rate, and this could likely be anything from $20 upwards. Given the amount of customisability required, it would not seem practical to me.

Oh wow...0 replies the whole day and all of sudden, please are posting here each minutes lol.

Well...I want to make this website really big, so I want it to have a custom system not just one you can install in 2-3 minutes. As much as it's customizable, it's quite limited, at least for me. For example, I would like the website to be just different...why does it have to have a sidebar? I know I can remove the sidebar, but where will I put my ads, additional info and some other stuff then?

Then also, it has huge limitations for the writers on my website. First of all, that area where they type article doesn't match the exact preview of the article. Also, they are not allowed to use polls, quiz and some other plugins and I don't really want to give them administrator privileges, of course.

There is also security issues. As far as I know, WordPress is quite vurnerable to hacker attacks. I did protect my website, but still, there is a big risk.

And finally - I want something unique. A few days ago I was reading some iPhone-related news and guess what? The website had the same theme as my website! A month ago I was on gaming website, reading some next-gen consoles news and I saw that theme too. Not fun.

For you who want to know it, I host the website on my "own" hosting, it's not hosted on wordpress.com

Thanks for your replies!

YES, it can be done, but it will cost you more then $15k if you want something stable and secure, plus that you will have to pay your coder every time you will need to add, remove or change something.
Anyway, a lot of big websites are working with Wordpress they have just designed a custom UNIQUE template and have changed the users/writers privileges so they can have more things and tools to play with.
And from my point of view the second option is way more cheaper then the first one, and you will still have a lot of options in your hands.

I will look into it more then and decide what to do.

I get what you're saying dude, but I know with some plugins, and maybe a bit of CSS tweaking, you can accomplish all of this much more quickly and cost effectively in Wordpress, than you would with something else.

In regards to the "Exact Preview" thing, there is a "Distraction free writing mode" button when in the content editor (Alt Shift W), it will give them a better idea of how the article will appear. There's also the "preview" button they can use as they work, if that's more convenient. There is also a "Custom privileges" plugin, if you want to modify what your authors can and can't do.

Maybe I'm a WP fanboy, but I'm quite certain you can do everything you need without migrating completely :P

Listen, you can argue about platforms all you want. The NUMBER ONE rule in SEO is NEVER move a ranking page.

If you move to another platform, more than likely all your URLS will change. When it does, all of your pages will disappear from the search engines and have to be re indexed, and 301's put in place.

It is a nightmare, and your rankings will plummet along with traffic.

I have given the OP a little help in the past, and I am very well aware of his site, and if it is finally ranking and getting traffic it is insane to change it.

Look I Hate WP, I am the first to say do not use it except for a blog, but in this case, he picked WP, now he needs to live with it.

I have never seen a platform change that did not devastate the rankings, is all I am saying.

Custom CMS is really expensive, and in a lot of ways, not better.
You may change the design/template, but for better result don't change the CMS. Custom CMS usually have less features than Wordpress, tend to be slower and more buggy, and requires programmer intervention to move something or to add even a minor detail.
Some tweaking and design could give you these look, but still with WordPress as CMS. In short, don't change the CMS, just change the design.

I think OP needed a custom theme (if you're going for WP) that will do his requirements. Btw, those things you needed on the backend can be achieve by using different plugins or making one for your writers. Look around for custom theme and list your requirements clearly :)

You can do anything within Wordpress, I think it's a bad idea moving away, if you have development ideas in the future it will cost more to get changes made if you're on a custom CMS.

And a custom CMS which doesn't get updated regularly will be more prone to hacking. You won't have any plugins, so any small things you want to add which could easily be achieved by installing a plugin will cost you money on a custom.

Our company used to maintain our own custom CMS, it was really good - but WordPress proved to be better because it's constantly improved.

Think of WordPress as a framework, build around it, anything is possible.

Sorry, to answer your question - if you were to get a custom CMS created, you (or the developers) will easily be able to move all of the content across by creating a script to import the WordPress export. So yes it is possible.
