So, I want to rank on some keyword but my domain is only related to that kw, not EMD. I'm thinking to write an article for that keyword that I want to rank for and build backlinks to inner page. Is this a good approach?

Also, what should I rank the root domain for? Since it has a generic name, not a keyword one.

Thanks

Did you miss out the first part of this post?

You can try to rank the root domain for related keywords to your niche. Maybe some long tails. This is really not a big issue mate.

In this scenario, I will need to backlink the inner pages only, right?
Should I also build some backlinks on home page with the same anchor text? I mean, I can also rank the homepage for those keywords.

Read up on silo structure..create the website with supporting articles with variations on the keyword you want to rank for to the page where your keyword is 3-8 pages 6-800 words each depending on how hard ur keyword is to rank..add social signals to all pages...the supporting ones and the keyword page..linkjuice will flow upwards in the silo..build links both to your supporting pages and to your keyword page..high authority links to your keyword page..

Are you talking about building a tier 1 for those inner pages and then build backlinks for both(for tier and for inner pages directly)?
Because I didn't asked this. I just want to know what will I rank the homepage for.

are u just going to try to rank for 2 keywords? one on the root url and one on an inner page? what i am trying to explain is how u should build the site to rank for your top keyword which would be ur homepage and secondary keywords by using a silo structure that passes all linkjuice up to your secondary keyword/keywords and to your main keyword.

You should target the broadest KW with your homepage, and then use sub pages to go more detailed into the niche, sending signals/internal links to the homepage with relevant exact match/lsi anchors.

As for linking, keep it relevant, and spread it evenly around your site. If the inter linking is good enough, wherever you link to, the power will spread around the whole domain.

thank you for your answer . ok, so i need to link to home page and use the broadest KW even if the domain is not emd?

Since it's not an EMD you should be fine. Just keep your main targeted keyword at about 30% of your anchor keywords to avoid any penalties. Anything higher than that would be too risky and could cause your site to be triggered for a manual review/penalty.
