Its been proven that theres a better chance of a stranger intervening when there are very few people around. When you are on your own and you see something thats not right you feel that you have to act. When you are on a crowded street and part of a gang there is a collective responsibility where everyone looks to someone else to be a hero...and it rarely happens. Hence why you hear about people dying "In broad daylight"

I saw a guy slapping a girl around once outside a nightclub, I didnt have to think about it, I went over and pumped his head inside out. Pretty soon I was getting kicked and punched from behind and about ten of his mates were letting me have it. I was lucky enough to run off and get out of there but I could have easily been stabbed and in the morgue by midnight.

My advice, we pay taxes for the cops to deal with this shit so that we dont have to be John Wayne.

You're right. This happened in the middle of the day on a very busy street where many shops and restaurants are. People were everywhere and the woman was loud. I'm sure that other people saw her. If he hit her, people would have been on their cell phones calling 911 and the cops would have been there very fast. But no one even went over to the man to see if he was okay, and he got kicked in the worst place a man can get kicked in.

The general idea behind why it's socially acceptable when a woman hits a man and not vice versa is because men have the physical edge to be able to defend themselves if need be, whereas a woman (usually) can't. I can relate to this because of an incident that happened to me years ago.
My now "ex" wife went on a rampage. I heard her hit the dog & as I rounded the corner she hit me on the chin w/ a desk phone. My immediate response was to hit her back, but I didn't since I was raised not to strike a woman. It bled profusely so I went to emergency. While the doctor was stitching my chin he kept asking me how it happened, & I responded I hit my chin on the sink. He said he'd been a surgeon too long & knew by the wound I had been hit w/ a heavy object, so it needed to be reported. I staunchly refused. Looking back I think I refused because I was embarrassed, didn't want my personal life made public, & I knew divorce was imminent so just wanted to move on.
As far as seeing others involved in a physical dispute I immediately call the police. If alone I avoid trying to intervene because the risk of them both turning on me, or weapons coming out is too great. There are too many instances of good Samaritans getting injured or killed trying to break up a fight.

The problem with domestic rows is that you have to be very careful and diplomatic if intervening, as an example a few years back I came upon a couple (presumably man and wife) who were having a push and shove slanging match, no real violence so I just kept back and watched warily, a uniformed copper on the other hand saw it as his duty (maybe he was right) to step in by grabbing the man and restraining him, within seconds the woman was screaming at the poor cop to let go of her husband.

The poor cop was totally taken aback and just stood and watched as the warring couple walked off arm in arm, and his words to me were "what the hell am I supposed to do ?"

So in answer to original op I would step in for either party if actual violence was being used only.
