Hey guys.

I just started my first ever site, and it will be a blog about video games. News, reviews, guides etc etc.

Assuming I have a lot of original content coming in, should I in theory rise through google and eventually be in a position to earn revenue?
Or would I need to spend extra on links or advertising or SEO?

I've never done this kind of stuff so advice is welcome.

If You Want to make money content is king
But without SEO nobody will see your content
Good design and easy navigation are also big factors

Content is not king, not even close... Backlinks are king.

If you can generate content that can convince your niche bloggers to place that article(with your link) its king, if not its just an other point in websites shitlist:)

Content is truly king - but beware.
You need to protect it or else
people will steal it and profit from it.

How to protect content you say? Well allow me to explain:

1. Keep making quality content. Don't blast out 4 posts and then leave the site idling for a month. Keep the content coming in a cool steady flow.

2. BUILD LINKS to your QUALITY CONTENT:
- ping it
- blog it
- tweet it
- FB share it
- G+ it
- bookmark it
- you get the picture, yeah?
This is the only way people will ever see your content.
When they do, they will in turn share it across the interwebs.

Unique content is KING. But, without a good SEO optimization, your website will "born like a talent, and die like a hope" :p

Cheers

Ok content is king people, can you explain to me WHY content is king for SEO?

OP I guess the best advise is take a bit of advice from all the above posts...

Because there are so many things to do to make a good site - remember every little bit helps...

Yes, content is heart for a website. It is very important to gather your site with unique quality content. But only heart can't complete your body. You also need to do SEO for your site.

You can do it by yourself or can hire an SEO expert.

Good luck.

Content is not king, not even close... Backlinks are king.

Either one without the other is pretty useless in most cases.

Seen a few examples where content alone wins (very few)
Seen a few where links is all that's required - not even a site, just certain places where just a links works

But in general you need both - and a decent sales funnel (which includes site design, sales copy etc)

Scritty

Content only works by itself if the niche is small, the content is a breakthrough, or if the site is already established.

Backlinking, regardless of what search engines say, can make gold out of dirt

What about writing decent content. No backlinks and ranking for lots of long tails? Doing the odd Press release, bookmarking and social shares?

Content is definitely king, it's one of the first things I focus on. It's not only good for SEO, but also improves conversion rates when the user is browsing the site. Focus on writing quality content, and then start doing on page SEO and adding backlinks to the site.
