Any linkbuilding whatsoever would be defined as "blackhat" as it's against Google's Webmaster Guidelines.

To be a whitehat - google wants you to write compelling content and let webmasters link to you organically

This type of link building has been around for over 5 years though and is still very effective. I don't see it being obsolete anytime soon.
