Using an expired domain for amazon affiliate site?

Hi all,
I am new to IM so am sorry if this doen't make much sense.
I have been building amazon affiliate websites since April with varying success. All my sites so far have been fresh domains, some with harder niches than others and different methods of building backlinks all targeting low competition keywords. I followed the guide in the BHW thread titled "[TUT] Buying Expired, High PR Domains For Backlinks " and got my hands on an expired web design company site from around 2006.
It seems to have over 100000 backlinks, mostly from clients of the web design company (they have a small link saying "designed by sitenamehere.com" on each page)

Here are it's metrics from different backlink checkers
Ahrefs: URL rank - 21 Domain Rank - 47
majestic SEO: citation flow- 26 Trust flow - 12
MOZ : DA 31 PA:40
It doesn't seem to have any google penalties on it either

So my questions are:
If I built an amazon affiliate site on this domain will it help my site to rank quicker and better? Compared to fresh domains which can seem to take weeks to settle down for targeted keywords.
The domain name and backlinks are not related to my target niche, would this have a big effect on serp ranking if I was to make a site about power tools for example?

Yes, you would get better rankings and faster. I have also used old web design domain successfully. You will gain rankings and authority from the links, the only question mark is how your visitors feel if they come to CoolDesigns.com and you try to sell them toaster.

good point, it'll be interesting to see how much that may affect the conversion rates.

Finding relevant domains, is the best way
Best o find older domains as they are less likely to be penalized

For amazon what you need to look for is expired product domains

Or he can just 301 redirect the domain he bought to a new fresh domain with a product/niche related domain name.. He'll get most of the link juice from the old domain along with the SERP boost and in the meanwhile he'll have a niche related domain name that make sense for his potential customers
