Hey guys,

So I was reading the 3D mail ebook and came across some pretty good ideas for mail pieces.

Now I remember someone saying that the item you send should have a message attached to it!!!

So I wanted to list a few things that you can use as mail pieces.

1. Dice. Are you tired of gambling with xxxxxxx
2. One member here said jingle bells so the package makes noise
3. Scissors.... Looking to cut the costs of xxxxx, cut out xxxx and get results today!!
4. Sending a mini trash can (yes expensive ) with letter saying Are you throwing away sales in your xxx business?
5. Sending a bank bag saying " this is an idea you can take to the bank"
6. Sand timer saying your running out of time to take advantage of xxxx
7. Pen but that's boring
8. Shredded money in clear bag saying if you don't use xxxxx, its like throwing away money.


Those are just a few ideas.

What kind of items do you find worked best for your campaigns? I was going to add a party favor but I have no tag line lol. Just something to make the mail lumpy.

All insight and thoughts are appreciated!!!

I'm working in printing industry, so in one of our mail campaigns a few years ago we print (at almost no cost for us...) millions of fake USD and we send along with the mail a pack of 100 USD fake banknotes (front side like regular dollar, back side our campaign messages). We put 20-30 face bank notes in every envelope.
The phone don't stop to ring for almost 3 weeks.
Conversion rate was lower although (no more than 5%-7%)

I would suggest you try several. What works for someone may not work for someone else. It has a lot to do with the content of the letter as well and the aggressiveness and tone used....not just the "bulky" piece. It is a combination of the two that results in phone calls and website visits.

Bulky mail is getting saturated - so many companies are doing it now. We get a half dozen bulky mail pieces a week from a wide range of companies. We are finding better response rates on VERY simple letters. No long winded sales letters. Just identify a problem in one sentence and then list a few bullet points on why/who you can help - and contact info.

It's funny but I've noticed the same and my mailings now are straight to the point with very little sales patter, problem - solution - conclusion - signature.

I now treat my mailings as an introduction to what I'm going to offer them, as opposed to a full on sales pitch.

Yup, we are using our mailings now as a tease...instead of just listing off services (because they get 10 letters like that a week) - we use something creative to peak their interest enough to call or visit a specific URL with a special offer etc. Works well. Simple works now. It may not work in a few weeks, but as of now we are on a "simple" kick...

I guess it depends on the industry and the person opening it.
I receive mails with similar approach once it awhile, and I felt like a I got 'duped' after taking a closer look at it. Not a good feeling. Just my personal opinion tho.

I have been testing a new sales letter, it starts off like a letter you would send a pen pal or more like friends would send. Then identified a problem I see in their business model and or marketing model and a solution from a friends point of view all free of charge. (Kinda like teach me something, I'll come back to learn more approach I am hoping) Then a personal Sig at the end with my Phone number. and a P.S. If you need any more advice please call me at any time.

KInda like the approach you make to a female.

You see a female you dont know but want her number

you: "Raise you hands like you know her" I know you, Umm you are hmmmm

by doing this you get to meet her and learn her name and have a chance to get her number, with out her knowing you where even hitting on her, I am hoping my sales letter works like this.

Another thing to take into consideration is the tone/personality of your sales people. If you send out an over the top mailer and the client calls in and gets a boring/robot sounding sales rep then it isn't going to work. They may see the mail piece and it triggers a phone call but if they are not impressed with the person on the phone it kills the mood. Having great phone people are a huge part of the success/failure of a mailer.

So very true, I do not have a sales team, How ever Do agree with this and know once you have someone excited or interested in something you need to read them. If I can not get a face to face on at least 50% to 75% of the calls I got from mailers I am doing something wrong. I tend to let the caller lead me, and reinforce what they are saying with my own key points. I also have files on each company I sent a mailer to, that way when they call and tell me who they are I can search the business name or owners names, Or even just the phone number via the windows task bar. ( File:c/business_name_owner_name_phone_number I prefer to just search soon as I get the call via phone number). This is a great tool to have, because before sending the mailers you can have more detail filed away, such as packages and links to review sites or what ever.

This all makes you look more professional and can help you sale the right things to the right business. Sorry drift off there but thought it a great tip.

The tone of the person can tell if they are presold or not as well, If they are confused sounded by asking a lot of ?'s, they want to know more you can do for them, you need to work harder to sell someone who is confused, you'll need to pin point what is confusing them and explain it.

P.S. I target my mailers, I rather spend more detailed time looking up someone to sell to, then to just mail 300 flyers. Best thing about this is, I can spend that extra money eating at the business (face to face with another client from a different field usually )I am sending flyers. That way when I do get the face to face, it's almost a 100% sell. Also I mainly only do this for hospitality type of business, I worked in these business and understand there are many types of owners and want to make sure I am working with a true hospitality type of person. I prefer quality clients over mass. I get better prices, due to their automatic success.

Yup, it is all about listening...a good phone jockey will let the client do the talking...and tailor the pitch to suit their needs, etc.

A rookie on the phone can turn a kick ass mail campaign into worthless trash.

And if you have rookies, arming them and teaching them how to use different types of data to sale is a great thing for them to learn as well. This can help them pick up some lackluster traits in their tone on the phone. Such as knowing the clients cost to acquire a customer. (even if this is a ball park estimate gathered by other data) or evening knowing the average customer that uses coupons on the clients current local advertising. (around 1%-2% here in my local area per grand spent!) But armed with a good sales force you can turn a simple income to a full six digits a year if not more.

Get your sales team feeling excited to be helping these people, and the more sales you will close with your campaigns

Exactly. A team environment produces at a much higher rate. That is why larger corporations put such an emphasis on team building exercises outside of the work place as well. Office softball teams, bowling leagues, team building weekend trips, etc.

Of course you've got the gambling theme, but anyone got any ideas re: what to write on the card? I thought about using the Aces, Kings, 10s and 7s.
