The Cheapest Way I Know to Copyright

An author shared this with me a long time ago.. Since then, any unique, important, informative, 100% created by ME... I have used this method to save from ONE lawsuit, and was able to settle outside of court with THREE who stole my work! (Gas money $$$)


  1. Print your content that you would like to copyright.
  2. Put in a Manilla envelope and seal.
  3. Go to FedEx/USPS/UPS and get the prepaid document mailer folder.
  4. Ship this package to yourself with a tracking number with your dates, etc..
  5. Never open this package again and you have PROOF you created the material on X date.

I am sure this has probably been shared before but just trying to give back!

Who's to say you didn't use a blowdryer melted the adhesive and slipped in the material after the fact tho? lol
 
This does nothng. The only way to protect a copyright is to register it.
 
My grandpa told me this ounce! Lol he called it " poor mans copyright"
 
It would probably scare off most people and work on most other small cases, but I don't think it'd work very well when going against large companies.
 
No, it is not working. Works have to be published and protected by registration to be worthy of copyright protection. Specially in the US it is a law designed to generate revenue for the governement.
 
I have looked at that model previously. It is a good model really and probably scares the smaller guys away. But in any violation, they probably throw a lot of money and you will still lose if you don't have the money to back up the lawsuit. Suxs right?
 
This will NOT WORK anymore in the US.
There was a TERRIBLE patent 'reform' that went into place recently to a FIRST TO FILE system (favoring big corporate america) -- as I understand it the first person to FILE for the patent is the owner of the invention. Prior art will nullify the patent if it was public domain. You simply saying you had the idea before (even with the FEDEX'd proof) won't mean much if the other guy beats you to file the patent.

You can thank corrupt politicians and greedy corporate america for the "reform" -- it was done so that corporate america can dominate.

And if you scan the material and email to yourself? probably the same but might worth a try.

Not true, any author of an original work is AUTOAMTICALLY granted copyright. The copyright registration process is simply for enforcement purposes.

The same applies to any country that is part of the Bern convention (of which the US, EU, Japan, most of the "developed" world are signatories.)

Not true!! Patents and copyright are TOTALLY different.

The way copyright work and the way "an invention that transforms a thing" (i.e patents) are TOTALLY different.

The OPs suggestion fo mailing the article to himself is totally valid.

You could also but it in a bank safety deposit box or even email it to yourself and a million other people.
 
start a magazine and publish your shit on it.

Well, only if we could all do that that would be no problem!

But you know, you could just publish it on yor blog and you'll be automatically assigned copyright!

I?m amazed that anyone still believes this.

1. It WILL NOT stand up in court. Whoever told you the story, lied.
2. You will be laughed at for trying it.
3. If you don?t register a copyright (copyright office in the US), you have little recourse, as NO ATTORNEY will take your case unless you can pay a HUGE retainer.

This ?cheap? copyright method, will be VERY costly if you try it.
 
hey, this method works as even copyrighting something takes hell of a long time
