Part 1

Every day walking to work in New York City you will see the homeless. Some mentally gone, some drunk, some just making a wage begging.
However, I like to think I can see the few times when it?s a wayward puzzle piece. It?s that feeling you get when you know the waiter, the cashier, the janitor is in the wrong place?they are smart, brilliant even. This is my attempt to fix one of those lost pieces.
I pass a homeless man who lives by the Hudson every day on the way to work. He is young, maybe 28, I will call him ?The Journeyman Hacker? until I discover his true name.
Before you think this is some weird ?fish bowl? experiment, you can just tell when he looks at you that he lost a series of battles.

This is one of the coolest humanitarian acts in history! I'll tune in to this journey. Beats Angelina and her adopting spree any day of the week.

Absolutely Amigo. Futurist Alvin Toffler predicted the financial problems of today in the 90s. It isn't political. It's technological.
A PowerShift to a completely digitized society. Show people how to earn a living with computers and you feed them forever. Evolve or Die. :(........

"Give a person bread and you feed them for a day. Teach them how to farm and you feed them forever."

Wrong if the guy has no land to farm he wont be able to feed himself.

But helping the homeless is great

I've always try'd to follow up on journeys here but just get to busy trying to break my back to succeed myself (trying). I've never bookmarked a journey thread, this will be my first. Small random acts of kindess goes a long way, and it's somthing thats growing rare these days. Look at this in a Large scale, we could have the next Steve Jobs living in a alley in a box that just needs a helping hand. (I'm not pointing out your guy silentthunder I'm just pretty much talking about someone homeless).
There's a lot of homeless that would rob you of everything soon as your back is turned. Then their is others homeless that wanna be apart of society and get off the streets they just can't bounce back, maybe because they just need a little help and inspiration to get motivated. This man is why I'm applauding you, congrats and I hope this homeless guy choose's the right path and I look forward to following this page or your blog.

I didn't at first there was a part 2 too the story already.

erhm...it's a metaphor.

He would not understand, he is very simple minded and seriously uneducated, I can tell, the pleb has just spent the past hour PM'ing me with dross, as he has nothing better to do with his life.

Good Luck on you journey!

You can present this study when you want to get a PhD.

Do you seriously expect him to take the lessons,
Its the right thing to do and he probably knows it,

But for him feeding himself today is the bigger problem.

Perhaps if you where to give him food money and tell him every morning
that you expect him to learn something, then you might have some success.

Winter is coming and New York get cold.
You can't expect anybody to learn under these condition.

I admire you for your attempt.though.
But I fear it is doomed to fail

I know that this is a metaphor, but this metaphor is only valid if people have land to farm (which btw is also a metaphor) .
Since on todays world there is no more free land there is no possibilty to farm or if there are not enough jobs there is no possibility that everyone has a job.
Its limited. The metaphor was created in times where there wasn't such big limitation like today.

Maybe he could take up fishing then, as they say there are plenty of fish in the sea, and give a man a fish he will feed himself for a day, teach a man to fish he can feed himself forever.

By the way guys. I found the OP online. I'm not personally attached to it but it's uber coolacious. :D

First its limited.Second you are not allowed to fish without paying a fee .

Ok nevermind ........ imho its great to support the homeless

repect silentthunder!, i appreciate you doing this for him. I can feel how you feel about things like that man.

Maybe he could take up shop lifting then. You know what they say, give a man a can of tuna and he can feed himself for a day, tech him how to shoplift and he can feed himself for life.

I'm amazed with media going after you.. "coding will not save the world" etc.. i don't see them helping the homeless in any way.. you'll be very well rewarded for this act.

Such a cool and hilarious post mickyfu. Seriously LMAO!! :p

This is a great thread, but the odds of him succeeding are very minimal. Why would you go to the streets to find someone deserving? There are people out there who have more drive than this homeless man that actually have jobs. Look at fast food workers making minimum wage. Some of them are smart and obviously have drive to go into work everyday.

This is a great story, but fact is there are more deserving people of your knowledge. Teach the homeless man to flip a burger. Teach the burger flipper to code.
