Funny SEO Company Observation

It is ridiculously hard to get SEO clients

We do SEO for our clients but do not advertise it.

I do not and do not want to sell SEO services. We are a web development firm.

I had a client call me yesterday

All quotes from your posts. So you do SEO and it is hard to get clients. But you don't do SEO because you are a web development firm. Oh, but then a client called looking for SEO...

Not trying to be a dick...but where are you going with this? This is all over the place...

Dude we do not ACTIVELY search for SEO clients, but they do come from referrals from other clients, people wanting add on services or people who are completely confused as to what they want, they search for web design, come to us and ask us for SEO.

also, understand verb tenses. IN PRESENT we do not actively search for SEO clients, or advertise it as a service...does not mean we did not do it 2 years ago.

We get our clients from internal SEO...whats so hard not to understand?

LOL people get angry when you bring to light their SEO scams...

Again, no disrespect to the REAL SEOers out there, you deserve respect. To the scam artists, you should all be arrested for Fraud.

Man go have a drink...you are wound up. You are making some serious allegations...who is getting angry? Just calling you out on your utter bullshit...you started this thread whining about a fucking sign you saw.

There is noone with any real marketing knowledge who would agree that a street sign is the best way to get SEO clients.

I know this.

Any advertising CAN work....but is this the best way?

Why not tell your clients to just use street signs, which are cheaper and, as you guys say, very effective in getting clients?

For Example: Once i was stuck in traffic and happened to glance to the side of the road, I saw a sign, with one saying "DO YOU NEED SEO? CALL 555-9569".

It is still on your mind! Yep!! that is SEO :)

I see why you thought it was odd, but in reality it would be ridiculous to only advertise in a medium that you also work in. No billboards advertising websites? No tv spots advertising print leaflets? I think not. As someone who works in an seo agency, I can tell you that it's our track record with real, paying, clients that counts, not how high we rank for "seo keyword".

I once had a meeting with an agency that spend 25 minutes exclaiming about how their site was #2 for a very popular keyword. Did they win the pitch? Hell no. Spend time thinking about your client's needs, and you'll go far.

Now, time to make a cardboard sign...

Yeah what a horrible firm with their lousy marketing..

Yet you remembered their ad and even came here posting about it, and posted the number (not sure if legit number, but still)

They are probably crushing you and laughing all the way to the bank with their "signs" - so bitter over these signs lol

OP, looks like you might be in the wrong business.

Yes, there are many crappy SEO firms and clowns offering services they don't know how to deliver, just as there are in any field.

A successful SEO company will strive to be the best and deliver the best results for their clients.

I am not making a "serious allegations", for all I know you are an expert amazing SEOer. But for you to deny that our industry(an i am including my own web development/design) is not filled with fraud and people misrepresenting their skills is just an outright lie and/or misunderstanding.

Maybe I was wrong...and if so please accept my apologies, just doesn't seem like a sign about SEO, along with signs about weight loss and foreclosed houses is the most effective type of advertising for someone who is in the advertising industry(which SEO is more or less)

I am 100% agreeing with you - there is so MUCH bullshit in SEO...100% guaranteed....Panda proof...penguin proof...blah blah blah....guaranteed 1st page....

Maybe I need more information selling SEO, if we ever want to do it seriously.

We make a killing with web application development, as there are few competitors that can build what we can.

Shouldn't have said those negative things.

Could be our approach when we actively did it years ago, we would show them how we ranked in the top 3 for all major Web design and development keywords, wasn't too effective.

Then some guy would come along sell them a $1k a month SEO agreement and completely mess them all up, do nothing and run off after 6 months.

Just made me angry for a while, thats all and maybe I took it out on the wrong people.

I think part of your problem is that you're putting all of the blame on the vendors instead a balance of the business owner and the crappy SEO firm.

Many of these package deals are just selling links or using a one-size fits all strategy (which doesn't work). Below are some examples:

Situation 1: The business owners often want package deals because there's a list of line items they can follow, the number of links is quantifiable and it gives them a sense of trust and tangibility. The problem is package deals don't work in the long run. They might see success the first time around and keep repeat ordering the same package. This quickly leads them down the path to a penalty, they then blame the SEO firm. You can't simply take the same template and repeat it, that in of itself is a footprint and unnatural. SEO should never be done the same way each month. You need constant change to mimic natural link growth.

Situation 2: The business owner likes to pretend they know SEO (cause they did some "research" for 5 minutes on a forum) and they just buy a few package deals and put them together. The issue with this is either the package does not work or the business owner has no idea what an effective strategy is and therefore they jump at anything with a low price tag. The problem is unless you can expertly evaluate the packages strategies for cross compatibility it can quickly lead to penalty. Not all strategies or packages work well together, in fact, most don't.

Situation 3: They try doing SEO themselves by buying a bunch of packages and then F*** their site over. They then right it off as the vendors fault when the reality is THEY just did not know what they were doing.

Situation 4: The business owners tend to be over obsessed with link reports instead of results. They might even take the link report and then try to build off it on their own, which typically leads to disaster.

The fact is, many business owners are used to being in control and they try to control their SEO and instead F*** it up and then blame the SEO firm as a scapegoat for their incompetence. I know exactly what you're talking about in terms of their are a plethora of scam SEO companies out there or wannabe SEOs who don't actually know what they are doing.

------------------------

I do agree that 9/10 SEOs do NOT know what they are doing. I can't tell you how many people I talk to per week that are looking to outsource their SEO because they took on SEO clients without even knowing how to do SEO. I am always shocked at how these guys are selling businesses on SEO when they hardly have a clue about SEO themselves. I'm not talking about our resellers, but straight up supposed "SEO Firms".

On a weekly basis I get questions from "freelance seo experts" who don't even know what to charge and they quite literally make prices up. Most of the time I just shake my head when they talk about their strategy.

On average 50% of our firms clients have been burned by an average of 3 firms before they found us.
