How effective is Reddit for Online marketing?

I have been recently doing some research on using reddit as a marketing for startup / newly launched websites and after spending a week on this I didn't found it that effective.

Traffic from reddit was good but visitor to member conversion rate was way too low. I know it depends on website's content and various other factors as well but the website I was doing marketing for is quite good in terms of design, features etc.

Has any of you had success using reddit for online marketing?

Well it depends on the site really. I got some stuff doing ok with it and some are garbage lol !
 
It's a one-hit thing. Unless you're consistently producing unique stuff reddit likes, it's kind of worthless.

Their one of the toughest crowds on the Internet, I know that much for sure.
 
Trying to market to Redditors is like trying to have sex for virginity. It just doesn't happen. Unless you get on the front page it's pretty much only good for social bookmarking to get your site indexed on Google.

Reddit is something I use, but it has a very specific purpose.

First off - reddit is something I use to spread viral content, not products/not affiliate offers. I use it to spread content that doesn't have an agenda. Now: here is the thing. The website has ways of making money - incredibly unobtrusive (which is why it doesn't make as much as it could). Do reddit users ever engage in them? NO. I make NO money from those users. They'll come, eat up the great content, and then never pay you a cent. If your content isn't immediately available and able to be had for completely free, no effort, my experience is they won't engage.

BUT. What they are good for, is sharing it with their FRIENDS. Reddit users are great, because if they like you, they'll share you. So you go viral on Facebook, and suddenly the traffic that you can monetize starts pouring in - and then you make bank.

But - and I mean BUT - to have any serious long-term effect, your content needs to be FANTASTIC and on-goingly fantastic. The content on this website is exceptional and frankly mind-blowing (and no - there is no fucking way I create it) to the point that real-life media pick it up. But it is wordy - you could probably be less amazing with images, but monetizing images/memes is not something I have experience in.

Its very difficult...but i guess it depends from your content too.

I have a new website and in the first days all my visitors were from there (im still posting there sometimes),but they will only care for that specific content you post,then they will leave (at least the 90%). Plus almost all of them use adblockers which sucks,not only your ads are blocked but in most cases even your social media icons etc are blocked too.

I dont know whats your goal (get visitors to sign as members?),but the only way to get money from them is with mobile redirect,but its not user friendly at all and the visitors probably will never come back or they will report you.

Sort of. I've been spamming the fuck out of one particular sub-reddit. These fucking morons think I'm actually some chick posting pics. At any rate, I'm grabbing a few hundred bucks a month but it's a tough nut to crack. The best part though is that you can create accounts on the fly like nothing.
 
Well reddit users aren't stupid, they're quite sharp and they know when you're trying to advertise something (and they hate that). You might have some luck posting to smaller subreddits but just generally stay away from the default subreddits unless you have something brilliant and interesting.

The segment I am trying to hit is the Celebs reddit as I am trying to promote a Celebrity based website. I saw your thread but I have a low karma on reddit (42). Is it good enough to apply? :p

Thank you for the explanation. This has been an eye-opener for me. I think creating fantastically intelligent content is the key to success on reddit.
 
loclhero - Is it your custom created sub-reddit or the ones already there on the website?
