Can one actually make a living on websites like freelancer?
Any local success, scam, and beware stories?

Freelancer is gay... Elance is better, but still not worth it. You need to have local clients to be able to live off freelancing. For the extra, try these websites..

I have been on freelancer from 2006,they still paying until now...but to get work, its defend from your skill and creativity..also to many user on freelancer,so,we just get little chance to get awarded a project...

I earned $300 from freelancer writing projects but it is difficult to establish yourself as a good freelancer. Once you get some feedback on the corresponding skills then you are set to go. You can make lot of money, especially in graphics design and coding. However, it is filled with lot of spam projects. Once you are familiar with the site, then you can easily differentiate between the real ones and spam. Don't go there without being proficient in one skill at the least.

I personally know few that does, so, yeah, it's possible

Of course can, but it depends in which country you live in. Cost of living is very different around the world.

When this was my bread and butter it was always much easier to dig up offline leads (restaurants, doctors, chiropractors, dog stores, lawyers, niche shops, etc. They typically pay more, it was somewhat less competition. Plus you have the benefit of being local with face to face meetings, and opportunities to get other local referrals. South Africa may have some type of equivalent to our local chamber of commerce chapters. Working those events with a stack of business cards and a marketing assistant handing out free koozies to cold hands goes further than one would think.

Thanks guys.

my experience : you can make money from it, but have to work really hard, because there are lot's of people competing and bid on the same project, it's insane.

Your going to have to work really hard

I thought they are AH never knew they are gays

Freelancer is big scam and most of Project outsourced there reach that place after outsourced 3rd to 4th person i dont find any good use of it as Project poster or freelancer

Not worth it man. You make next to nothing with all these people lowballing like crazy on these sites. You'll do much better being an employer there and outsourcing - but even then.

Buuuut, it's a good way to start in this whole game.

Try to get local client, It will be good run in long term.
