What Do You Do With Your Old Laptop/PC?

Well, this laptop I'm using right now is still working perfectly. But this laptop is getting obsolete (no HDMI port, thunderbolt, .etc).
Running at 4GB RAM 1300MHZ, 2GHZ i5 quad core CPU. Nvdia FX1800m, 512 GB SATA.

I feel like getting the new model of my laptop (Dell Precision M4800). The guy has already prepared a quotation for me to buy and get it made.
It cost about $5500 in my currency (US$4400).
Specs: i7-4900MQ 8M cache up to 3.8 GHZ, 32 GB RAM 1600 MHZ, 512 GB SSD with 512 GB mSATA for OS bootup, nVidia K2100M 2GB GDDR, and many more.

But then, I realize this laptop is working fine (maybe might have problems handling future softwares) and I fear it might be a waste if I just get a new one. So if I were to buy, then what am I gonna do with this laptop? Trading in or selling it might be hard because it's old with scratches and such. I was advised to keep this laptop in my office and treat it as a 24/7 server and as a backup laptop.

I still use my 6 years old laptop mainly for running my sikuli scripts etc , Even i suggest to not throw away your old lappy. Keep it safe might come in handy .It will surely get you more money than selling it.

Funny thing..I am still using a Pentium 4 with 1GB of RAM and never needed to buy a new one. The only upgrades I did was getting a new monitor (Samsung LED), and a portable Hard Disk (2 TB).

I think that if the laptop still gets the job done keep it and you can still get the new one.

If the old one quits on you then start using the new one or use both at the same time.
You could also sell it to get a few accessories for your new one.

It depends mainly on what you use the laptop for.

yup it always a good idea to have a spare laptop or PC around as you never know what strange thing might happen. For me, I am not a hard core IMmer, but I do trading, so cannot afford to have laptop down for any single trading day. I have bought a Dell XPS12 ultrabook this Jan, cost only S$1600 after a discount purchased online. Tip if u buying Dell, try to speak to their rep live online and most of the time they can give u some discount(for mine i think ard $150 + capitalmall voucher). I believe the rep do take some commission when I ordered thru him.

1) It's always good to have a spare for testing, backups, etc.
2) You can sell it on eBay/CL.
3) DON'T, for the love of god, give it away for free because that person will pester you with every little f**** thing that will be wrong with that machine. Been there, done that.

I keep my old stuff. Never know what you might need for testing purposes or as a temporary replacement in the future.

I always sell them on to my friends who are not so technically gifted. They are always happy to take the 5-10 year old ones and think they are awesome. I usually make about 200-250 per sale.

I use it to track traffic of my competitors. I download toolbars and anything else that people run traffic through to get an idea of what offers are being pushed hard.

Hhahaha This is is the exact configuration that I have. Old one with singlecore on 3ghz, 1.5 gigs of ddr1 ram and the new one that I am using to play far cry 3, europa universalis and similar.

if this is the config, I dont think you require a new one. and as u already mentioned , it works fine. better not to purchase as of now. its ur decision after all

I have my old Laptops/Desktops set up with automation software on it. I also use it to store large databases of clients.

I keep my old equipment so that I always have backup machines. On an older machine I'll run scripts or IM software while my newest computer will run all my graphic and video software so I can cut down on render times. I have an old 13 year old box that I installed Ubuntu on and I run all of my financials on. Sometimes, all an old computer needs is fresh image of the Windows software since the registry can become bloated with old applications and stray entries. Combine that with a RAM boost and the machine can fly again.

You do not need to upgrade a computer unless you want it to do something that it cannot do, or you just want to.

The laptop you are thinking of replacing is a very good laptop, spec wise, for many people.. (far better than nine)

If you are going to give it away to someone you do not know, please consider contacting your local churches (or community center, veterans assistance center, or unemployment center) and see if they have a member who is unemployed, and has no computer.

To this person it would be a Godsend, and allow them to look for work much more effectively.

Your local food bank probably could use it too, as well as Meals on Wheels.

You could also donate it to a disabled veteran, just contact your local DAV chapter.

Barring all that, donate it to the local Boy or Girl scouts.

Anyone who is home bound and has no computer would find it very helpful as well.

Giving it away doesn't get you cash, but it will give you a great feeling inside.

Nice Techxan. I donate my boxes to the sheriffs ranch ( temporary displaced kids. ) I generally get a donation write off. They don't have much, or ever had much. I imagine whatever they are going through in thier lives, it makes it a little easier to adjust. I've never seen spirits not get lifted when Computers and Video Games are involved..
