301 redirect question

If I was to 301 redirect an old site to a new one to maintain the link juice and then after 6 months take the old site offline, would it take the link juice down with it?

Should I 301 redirect and then have all the links updated to the new domain also? What's the best practice?

you dont have to update the links, if the old site dies or expires the link juice will go with it soo you need to renew it if the links juice is crucial for your rankings

It'll drain the juice out of the old domain, you'll just need to ensure it doesn't expire until the backlink profile is completely transferred.
