Believing IM is about internet marketing.. when in reality it's all about business. You don't necessarily need to have SEO tool when you can just outsource the seo part. And you don't necessarily need to write content when you can hire writer.

I suffered from this as well. Thinking it's all about little wizardry tricks of cheating ranking with that software, converting to sales with that little marketing trick, whatever. At the end of the day if you actually want to see real money as a reward for the time you spend you need to understand it's business pure and simple.

Think like a businessman and not like a whizkid who thinks he can trick the world into paying him by being an internet smartass.

Trusted an on online friend to be my PayPal holder, who did send a couple of $1000 payments through Western Union and keep a decent cut, but eventually as the pay increased, i.e. some where around $3200, he decided to scam me and keep the money to himself.

Since it was done all online, I could do nothing, but regret my decision of trusting him.

The greatest way I have stolen from myself is probably time management. Most of us are involved in multiple projects, but keeping up with that and the metrics of how your work is paying off so you can focus on the proper areas is important. I don't get lazy, and I'm usually always busy.. but I'm sure my time would be more effectively spent if I had kept up with how much I was spending on each little project. A great bit of mentoring.

My greatest mistake so far is probably not participating here more years ago. The support here is phenomenal and the people are grade A+.

When first getting into IM spending months upon months of hard work building an affiliate site for a company that has a bad reputation for not paying. Then I ended up on here and found out the bad news about the company. But hey, it provided a platform for me to teach myself web design and now I'm putting my skills to good use

Sounds like one of my other failures. I built a generic web portal for travel affiliate deals that would let you search and post 'conferences/events' in any given city and help you find travel deals for that city. Then the network ended up sucking, took away most of the commissions, and on and on. They took everything I was using to monetize it.

- buying stupid domains (who knows)

1. Buying again and again into hypes like ALN, SAPE, etc... that eventually only harm your site (sooner or later), and you can start from scratch.
- getting blinded with an image of quick cash (which often also happened) and forgetting on the only reason why I ever started IM - to reach stable diversified fully residual income from a network of sites in niche I love, so I never need to work again.

Hopefully I'll never make the same mistake with these hypes!

Thinking that 'doing it yourlself' is cheaper.

I'm a programmer, so built a complicated site. Saved money? yeah, but it took me weeks! Which I could have put to much better use than screwing around with shitty javascript. If you learn something in the process then it's ok because you acquire a skill, but it didn't even teach me anything since I already knew how to code. Total waste of time!

My advice as someone in this business for 2 years and only now starting to make money (albeit small atm) is don't waste valuable time learning how to code, set up website, backup databases, restore databases. Yes this info is helpful but it will take you a long time to learn from scratch.

The thing is, and you probably don't realise this now, is that everyone who enters IM enters with a stop watch attached to them counting down the time until they will lose interest in IM and go back to trying to find a regular job. With that said, you must cut through any unnecessary mistakes or time-wasting tasks right now so as to give yourself the best chance of making some good money before the stop watch times out and leaves you wanting to leave IM becuase you didn't make any money while you were in it.

Outsource all technical stuff.

This is SO true. I wasted 6-8 hours trying to figure out how to transfer a WP site b/w hosts. I then realized I could outsource it for $5 on Fiverr, and handed off every domain this person. Sadly many people get caught up in doing design and technical shit when they should be focused entirely on perfecting their method/system and implementing it.
