Why not google such easy terms?
just typing "what is a proxy" into google gave me this great discription:
What is a proxy?
A proxy or proxy server is basically another computer which serves as a hub through which internet requests are processed. By connecting through one of these servers, your computer sends your requests to the proxy server which then processes your request and returns what you were wanting. In this way it serves as an intermediary between your home machine and the rest of the computers on the internet. Proxies are used for a number of reasons such as to filter web content, to go around restrictions such as parental blocks, to screen downloads and uploads and to provide anonymity when surfing the internet.
Why use a proxy?
If you are wanting to surf the web anonymously then proxies can provide you with a means to hide your home IP address from the rest of the world. By connecting to the internet through proxies, the home IP address of your machine will not be shown but rather the IP of the proxy server will be shown. This can provide you with more privacy then if you were simply connecting directly to the internet. There are number of proxies that can provide you with service. You can find a list of these simply by typing "Proxy List" into any search engine. There are some proxies which are free and some which charge money, the choice is up to you but we have found that the paid proxies are more reliable, faster and more secure.
Most users on this forum use proxies for various tools (for example: scrapebox) that need a ton of proxies to perform their tasks.

Yes...i did that Alpha.
Unfortunately, Google gives the Sterile Harmless Innocent definition of proxies. I wanted the street wise IM marketing version of why proxies are used and why people pay so much to have them.
I figured they were using it for IM in some respects...but i haven't figured out why.
I'm figuring it used to Scrape sites for SEO or create articles...but don't know for sure.
Maybe someone "who knows" can enlighten me ?
Think about it this way, a proxy is going to give you a middle man when you're accessing a website. Every connection you make to the website goes through the proxy. So, if a website wants to limit the number of requests you make per day from each IP address, you can 'virtually' come from any number of IP addresses through proxy servers. This lets you break out of such limitations, and also maintain some anonymity.

In IM here is the uses of proxies and why.
Use to Do SEO task like Posting to Blogs, Wen2.0s etc. And Managing Social media accounts hundreds of. From Private Proxies cause those are Stable and Reliable as you can't do that much stuff just from your ISP IP.
Using Scraped Proxies for Scraping purpose from Google etc as Public proxies are not stable so it's best to use for Scraping purpose only.
Using private proxies for YouTube uploading from multiple accounts at a time.
Like that many pupils to use the Proxies main core thing is to hide your Original IP from the sites you will use them on to get rid of Spam etc Issues to your Original IP.

some people scrape public proxies as a cheaper alternative
to private proxies to complete some seo tasks.
where as public scraped proxies are limited in what you can do
with them, private proxies are less so

Proxies are used for various reasons in the internet marketing industry, such as making more than one account, or searching Google in multiple threads. Scraping proxies refers to the proses of searching the search engines for the tell tail foot print of proxies list that people have shared on the web, when your proxy scrapers finds these foot prints it will scrape, or gather the proxies from the page and save them to a list for later checking and using in your internet marketing campaigns.

Proxies are used to hide your identity (the location from where you access the web resources) and it is a matter of slowing the process not speeding it.
Sometimes you need to use a proxies to access some websites because they block the access from some particular locations.

visited webpages via proxies are cached on servers via squid or other software, so its about speeding the process not slowing it ...

if your only referring to url scraping does what u say apply alpha
in using either private or public proxies for url scraping with tools such
as scrapebox

One of the reasons I use private (elite) Proxies, is to query Google for Rank Tracking purposes. By having hundred of keywords to be checked on a daily basis, it would be impossible to do that without using proxies (note: this is not a BH task, anyway).
Unfortunately using scraped proxies is not good enough for that specifical task: those scraped proxies usually won't last more than a few hours, consequently it would be a PITA to continuously update proxy settings in my rank tracker software.
There are good proxy vendors here (I am sure you already checked the proper BHW section) that will give you ~10 private/elite proxies for a few bucks per month.
That is a very good investment buddy.
Once you'll get them (proxies) you will discover how many tasks you can perform with
