Snowden leaks: US and UK 'crack online encryption'

Is he really? What was so revolutionary about the information he leaked before and this now? Does the information in the bbc article really surprise anyone here? I am pretty sure most of the people here are aware that governments spy on their citizens. Heck, any logical person can see why it would be profitable for a government to do so.
So the question has to be asked, why is the media broadcasting his messages so eagerly? If the information he is leaking is so goddamned important, and crucial to the safety of the united states... Why then is every media outlet constantly regurgitating these supposed secrets to the masses?
Because... it's controlled, it's intended to be this way. These leaks are supposed to happen. Because it's in the governments best interest for EVERYONE to know that they are spying on you constantly, that you are not alone ever. This puts fear in everyone, and makes them more controllable.

Having been on the Internet for a long time, it seems almost obvious to me that they could break any encryption. Their budget is unlimited, their computers are the best in the world, their math guys are bright. What would they be doing in that black building otherwise? Playing poker and discussing relativity theories?
