CPA really isn't that complicated. You have to learn how to pick good offers, payday advances for example converts very well.
Seasonal stuff like Letters to Santa does very well. Most networks tell you what their top converting offers are, they want you to make money so they can make money.
Now I get calls 10 times a day from my affiliate managers, but in the beginning I would call them and ask "hey, what are the big boys promoting?" simple as that. If their top earners are shoveling money at it, it's a safe bet that they are making a ton of cash.
Next is targeting: Where are the potential customers? What keywords are they typing in to find this product or service?
If it's payday, keywords like "no credit check payday loan" or "fast cash advance" are top converting phrases.
Now you need to buy traffic for these types of keywords at as low a cost as possible. You can rule out adwords and YSM because they are too competitive. There are thousands of ad networks you can buy from for a few cents per click.
The CPA companies give you banners to use as well, so use them, most affiliates don't hence why most affiliates never make any money. Buy impressions on sites that target your customers, it's cheap and effective.
One of my favorite tactics is to have my own banners made because a lot of the time I don't like the ones the merchant created. I pay $10 for all my banners and they look awesome, I don't think I can post a link to the company I use, but you can PM for it.
I've created payday loan banners targeting internet marketing forums. Why? because most people in internet marketing forums are broke, and they need money to get going. buy advertising, get websites up, etc.
So I create a banner that says something like "Get $1500 cash to start your internet marketing business by tomorrow morning, no credit check, guaranteed approval!"
That converted like crazy and I was getting $22 a lead. CPA is one of the easiest ways to make money, you just have to be smart about it.

Well what you are saying it is true,... if you target forums you get more conversions, but in the opposite you get more people spamming for it.
Many forums do not accept links or images on your posts only in the signature, and to be honest before someone get into your signature you must get reputation.
This process will take a while and at the end for the time spent, it is not worthy.
Sending crappy traffic to banners will not get you into the pot, you have to create a marketing campaign for that, splitting and testing every day, spending time and effort to achieve your results.
If it was that easy just send traffic to a banner add, we all should be millionaires, but this is not the case.
There are however people around that with 50 billion impressions monthly, got nicely ROIs from their CPA networks.
But again of course with 50 Billion impressions monthly and 1 Million lead generated, you certainly will be more happy. But this does not means that the system works.
Becuase if you got attention with small numbers you will definitely see that for 30K impressions you get 3 clicks or more throught a banner ad advertising campaign and 0 leads. So it is worthless? It depends, will you ever buy a stock that does not make you any return?
For what is concern CPAs, they are not complicated but people are, and because you see banner ads everywhere on the net, people get used to them and many times consider them annoying.
In my opinion the efficiency of a banner ad advertising campaign today has not got the same efficiency compared to the one in the 90s.
Sooner the idea of banner ads advertising will be replaced by videos and no longer working.
You should see CPA in the long term as a form of investment, I mean in 10, 20 years time from now, what really will be profitable to get into.....and in my opinion I do not think CPAs for waht they are today, should be the ones to be considered for a long term profitability.

I'm not talking about spamming forums, I'm talking about buying ad space on them, which is generally very cheap.
Banner advertising doesn't work when you do not target it correctly, and most marketers do not.
If you sit and really think about "Where are my best potential customers for this offer? You'll start coming up with where you should be buying traffic.
Don't get me wrong, I actually enjoy that everyone says banner advertising is dead, it gets them out of my way and drives down my CPM.
Bottom line is the title of "internet marketer" is used to freely. Just because you buy a little traffic and sit at your computer for a few hours does not make you an internet marketer. You have to work your ass off to call yourself a Doctor, and you have to work your ass off to be called an Internet Marketer.

Most CPA affiliates cast a huge net in the ocean and drag it hoping to come up with their catch because it is much easier to buy a bunch of traffic and throw it at a link. Successful CPA affiliates go to the stream where thousands of salmon are jumping and just scoop them up.

Theres an easier way to make money with cpm, but starting out with cpa is a good idea. I'll elaborate more down the line.

hmmm .. and what about the other end .. how should a publisher earn from CPM .. are there some good advertising companies which offer CPM ads .. I joined a few and they turned out scams

Try freedomofads.com which uses the Microsoft ADecn platform. They pay a little higher than Canep Media. If you get alot of impressions, then you should shoot for Tribalfusion or Casale Media.
