Are people seriously getting $750 for a 5 page wordpress site?

Yes, its ridiculous, but everyone and their dog has a website these days which means there are countless people out there dumb enough to spend such amounts.
My friends mom just spent over $10,000 paying a website designer to design a simple real estate site where users could search for houses based on price, location, and several other factors. Are you serious? There are a handful of wordpress plugins that will do the exact same thing. I have lost so much respect for this woman.

A custom site will always surpass the quality of a readily available or paid theme.
Plus you have more control over direct customisation etc even on CMS's!

Let me give you a quick story
2 years ago my brother knew 0 about webdesign. I was a starting IMer and he learned a couple of things about WP along the way. He also discovered Themeforest and other wp theme markets. 3 months later he started offering "free" webdesign through classified sites. Just simple 4 page WP sites with themes from the above mentioned website. The only condition was that they had to buy his hosting and domain service, which basically was a simple reseller hosting program. He charged ?25 per month for hosting that costed him ?1 a month. He is able to put 15 clients on 1 hosting account. Last month he got his 150th client..
Now, let's do some quick math: ?25x150 = ?3750 per month - ?1x10 = ?10 (hosting costs)
The end result is ?3740 (+/- $5k)
you know what the best thing of this is.. he still knows 0 about webdesign

It's funny you should mention that because it's exactly what i was planning to do, though I just wanted to check whether or not I can charge a stupidly high amount for the design.

if you have the right client, you can always sell thats worth maybe 250 for a price of 750, or maybe even more.

Damn, I would have done it for $9,950
I've been in the web design business for several years now and I can tell you custom design and programming takes a lot of time and effort, hence the higher prices. When it comes to charging customers, it comes down to your ethics to charge them $10k for work that took you a few days or charge per your calculated work time. There are all kinds of people in this industry.

Personally I think if you are handing over a 3 page out of the box site then you are only in the $99 to $199 market.
I just built a site for a friend of mine. He was quoted $2500 for a fairly straightforward 8 page site. I looked at what they pitched him and it was a $57 theme built on the Genesis framework.
However to customise it correctly and use custom graphics/photos/logos/icons etc I had to spend $300 ish and it took me about 4 days of tweeking to get it right. I did it as a favour for a friend as we have other business interests together. Strictly speaking for the amount of time spent if he was a walk in client then $2500 was about fair. Its all about how you value your time and how good you know you are at your job.

Depends on how you wanna do this.. my brother started doing this more for the fun actually but somehow he ended up with 150 clients and a minimum of $5k passive income. My advice; milk as much as you can. If someone is ready to pay a bazillion dollars for a website that takes 5 hours for setting up, than why the fuck not? It means they can afford it and you gotta eat too, right?

So anything is possible and for god sake don't lower your prices, don't ruin other businesses.
In my country there are companies that charge you $2000 for a simple website created from a template, and there are others that do the same but for 1/4 of their amount. The higher priced ones have more work that this ones with smaller prices...

Ha, I'm a student who can easily live off $30/ week, I suppose that's why these prices are striking me as odd. Which reseller service is your brother using? is he happy with them?
