URL Shortner sites, how do they make money?

Quick question: we know people can make money from using url shortner sites such as ****** but how do such sites make money? ok more so tinyurl or bit.ly ones that dont use ads

Some shorteners are provided by some bigger company which collects traffic stats on the urls, so they're not making money from the shortener service directly.

Bit.ly sells its stats such as how many people when to which site, and from where. Other sites lead people to a page that is 90% iframe of the desired URL and on the top of the page, there are ads.
