Hey, I have been offering web design, seo and social media to small businesses offline and have like 3 clients so far. So I got into an argument with my business partner that this website isn't worth $400, that he wouldn't pay for it. Here it is cleanuptime.ca

I disagree with him, it's possible to sell this design for $400. But I wanted to check with you guys who have more experience selling webdesign services. How much would you charge if you designed/outsourced this website?

Velvet Theme?
How much time did you invest?
What did you negotiate in the contract terms? By the hour? total job?
Do you have any ranked keywords?

Things cost whatever someone is willing to spend based on the value that you sell.

website - seo and social for 400 sounds like a fair price.
dont go to cheap.

Depends on how big of a client you sell it to :)

This was a test to see what I do for website design/development. My biz partner is willing to invest money in the business (already has). He gave me a $500 budget to see what I would be able to build.
I invested his $80 and a total of 6 hours to build it.
I suggested we need to get web design jobs at $400 from classified websites and I would build the website for now, since its a low price point for local businesses(IMO).
After I finished it, he said that nobody wouldn't spend $400 on the website.

I was originally thinking of putting up ads on classifieds. Maybe people there aren't willing that much money on websites, at least initially.

It's just for the web design.

So it's more about the client than it is the website.

If they were to sell that domain/site to a small client, they would most likely receive less than if they sold it to a client with big pockets. :)

IMO $400 is a perfect price for this design. People at freelancer.com or Odesk would have done it for $150. A broker will negotiate for $300-$350 for this design. So don't miss your chance. The price is good.
Make some back end sales like Hosting, Social Media Appearance and Management in case you think the customer is potential for higher life cycle.

Of course it's worth that amount of money - probably more. It's a nice clean modern design.

In real life you'd need a few extra pages and a blog but that would be dependent upon the client providing some copy.

As mentioned above don't go cheap. In real life there would be lots of dialogue with the client as to understanding what they want plus revisions etc. $400 is way too cheap for any type of 'proper' web design service.

I don't pay more than $300 for any custom WP themes... you may get more for a one-off for a customer...

and personally, I would chop that header by about 100px, get more content in the page..

As others said if you sell it for 400$ price is good.
6 hours of work is min to make 340$ profit

Thanks, going to stick with that price point for now, get more experience, build a portfolio and eventually charge more. I probably will need to focus on a different audience.

Out of the 5 clients I have spoken with, only one knew about wordpress. The others look like they were getting migraines when I mention wordpress.

I thought the same thing. I will get more content and reduce the header height.

Your client should put it this way:

If a potential customer saw this website, would he/she be impressed?
Yes. It is clean, simple, modern, perfect for a local business.

Is it worth $400?
Yes. Potentials clients will far out way the cost within a short period of time.

With some added pages/content/features $400 is the MINIMUM you should charge. Some good advice when doing freelance web design:

Always give your client a clear structure/funnel.
set your prices before you do anything, and get a deposit of some kind
sign some sort of documentation

I found clients would always try something on with me if I showed I was 'weak'.

Instead of giving a pre-template for your clients, why not add more value? Create a custom design / theme, and brand it. You can ask more $$ for that too. Just saying :P

Personally I wouldnt spend more than $100 on that full page.
But I'd sell it for $300-600, depends on the mood im in. (I dont do webdesign. Just a random guessing based on.... not even sure)

Seriously, its only about finding the guy, that is willing to spend the $X. The Price itself is irrelevant.

This is on my todo list. A branded theme with different layouts is the way to go!

My concern is, some customers can't tell the difference, many don't even know what wordpress is.

It's actually very easy to brand the pre-template as my own custom design, not ethical but very possible and probably is being done a lot! I think that only people with some kind of coding experience would be able to tell the difference.

What if the pre-template got more customers for the business than the custom one? wouldn't that be more valuable.

Buddy, don't use nulled themes for your clients.
As I see the theme that you have used is not original, it is a nulled one.
If you want to keep clients for a long time and save some big problems to yourself, always use original themes.
They cost very few dollars, $40-$50, but like this you are safe from malicious codes that are found in nulled themes.
Cheers

Site's price = Monthly income * 8
(I think this formula, but depends on how much time you have added there and how much $$ invested).

You could flip that for $400 if it were on page one of Google...

Yup, this was a test between my biz partner and I to see what I could build for $400.
I have used nulled themes to show the concept to the clients, if they like it I buy the theme.
