I mean, nothing is white hat if you start link building, you shouldn't build links if you ant pure white hat. If you want to build links white hat way then this means that you should invest a lot of time to find a way where Google won't think that you are building links.

Also, I think, that white hat is a lot about your imagination. If you can think outside of the box and create opportunities in the places where other people failed you're on the good road.
It's like any other business.
If you're in the crowd it is warm but you're nowhere to be seen. If you're going solo it may be tough but you are free to create campaigns on your own in any direction you want. You can get 100s of thousands of UVs in one day with 10 minutes of work and a couple of letters written in a way that will make the people contact you back and even offer free help (social media campaign, articles on top sites, etc etc)

What's your website about? It is possible to create linkable content with reports, reviews, posts about how much you can earn in your trade etc.? If so, you can make buzz around that and get some natural links.

You can also create some websites on very specified topic - it's not white hat but it should be safe if you build high quality websites that don't look as if there wer created only for link purposes ;-)

The best way of building white hat, relevant, natural, traffic links is using Google search -> put keywords -> press enter -> select Discussions/Blogs/Videos etc..

This way it would be too relevant, high ranking sites, traffic sites and you would get the benefit.
