I'm thinking about hiring a PPC Expert from Elance.com

Just be prepared to go through the hundreds of applications when finding an "expert"..

PPC Expert from Elance is not that bad idea to proceed. Very firstly, you should know about the respective issue and only then, you will be able to make your refunds.

I am thinking about hiring an expert PPC team from elance.com and I wanted to hear from people that have or are already doing this.

Please share your experiences; what can I expect; what should I think about; what would you do differently in thinking back?

I found someone that has 50% repeat customers and 100% 5 stars / positive feedback and they are top 5% in adwords. How much do they normally charge per month (no including the actual budget for the adwords/PPC promotions) ?

Before you hire someone. Save your money!!!

Just trying to share it man.. I learned a lot about SEO here on BHW and Im just trying to give back. :)

A. Nothing against elance.com, I don't think that's the issue here.
B. It's not only legitimate to be a PPC manager, it makes all the sense in the world - you don't have to put up your own money to run campaigns.
C. When you run your campaigns and there's possibility for feedback, you would want to do THAT, instead of working for company/agency, where you can't get credit for a successful campaign.

Now, I really think you're looking for someone as a part time job, not a great expert that will dedicate a 20-30 minutes a day to your account, and even that, once a week.

I found that taking smart, young interns, letting them run a campaign can really make them work hard to prove they can be successful. For a $1000 (a month), you're really talking about a baby-sized campaign, where the wages you pay a person to truly manage it, will be larger than your spend (which must be taken into account as you calculate your ROI).

Hence, unless you're aiming for a $1000/day account, makes no sense to hire an expert/less of an expert to run it.
Does make sense to do it yourself, make it someone's part-time responsibility. Usually, an internet savvy, online-marketing experienced person would be able to adapt to running a PPC account, in a matter of weeks.

Personally, I would just be very skeptical of this, if you can make good returns with adwords, why would you do anything else except build your own sites and offers?

It'd be same as saying, If People are good at SEO, Why Do they Provide Services To Others? :p

Because its upfront money & no risk. Thats how most PPC management individuals/agencies work.

Plus, Not everyone has funds to invest in PPC. That Doesnt Necessarily Mean They Dont Have The Skills / Experience in PPC.

...you can get the same service at BST for a fraction with a reputable service provider.

I've been trying to figure out what BST stands for. Google results haven't been helpful. Would you mind letting me know? Thanks!

A lot of so called 'PPC specialist' on elance or freelancer barely understands how adwords actually work. Let's be honest here, a lot of them know how to setup a campaign (oh duh), but no idea how to track, analyze and make appropriate changes based on the data collected.

Yeah yeah yeah.. they talk about how they will find you the best keywords and all those B.S., but most don't even know how to put in the right modifier. Even worst, one of my local client offers accounting services and most of his clients are local, of course. That freelancer helped him target the entire country because it will get him more traffic! Thousands of dollars wasted when I looked into his account.

Those guys helped him made ad copies that made no sense at all. Their A/B testing were horrible. Furthermore, 9/10 of those so called 'specialist' don't use negative keywords in their campaign. Yikes.

It is my opinion that elance sucks big time. Most people send ridiculous cheap offers like i candy bar for a full ecommerce site, yeah right. You can only imagine what kind of site you will end up with. One that looks like it was made in 1997. And the few good people there charge way too much. So it is either silly prices for badly executed jobs that will end up a lot more in lost time and patience or way too much for good quality jobs you can get elsewhere for better prices.

I guess you have to keep mining for good freelancers there. They do exist, but they are few and far between and I just don't have the time to lose on what will most likely be another losing bet.

i have been thinking of outsourcing my PPC campaigns but hesitating a bit.

You can either learn how to do it yourself or hire someone. If your budget is small and you have a decent offer that is a good fit for adwords then find someone who can do it at a fixed management fee and maybe willing to give you some pointers along the way. Also not all offers are a good fit for PPC, just saying. And Anyone pitching a % of spend on a fixed budget IMHO can end up doing a lot of things wrong...only thing right would be spending money with not so pleasant results. Make sure you "own the account" in case you decide to run it on your own in the future and you have your own google analytics/webmasters tools linked to it so you OWN the data.

The purpose of outsourcing is to share the same goal you have for running a ppc campaign and hopes that the agency/person you hire can get help you achieve those goals. You pay them for their expertise and knowledge that you don't yet posses and trust that they do a good job. Its not always just about running campaigns for clients, sometimes the clients wants to learn also while seeing positive results.

It just so happens unfortunately, Google is constantly updating, tweaking, beta-ing (if that's even a word) and coming out with new tricks, features etc..which makes it difficult for newbies to keep up to date on the latest and greatest, which is why "ppc specialists" get paid! Its certainly a learning curve (and can be an expensive, ongoing problem) if you do it on your own. You need to put your time in if you want to run your own accounts/campaigns down the road and ask questions, read the adwords/analytics blog, test, test, test and optimize and get the results you need. Study the certification exam tutorials and see what it entails, you may be ready to do it on your own or realize that you need more knowledge. Knowledge is power especially when working with an agency/freelancer!

Mate - why not make yourself the expert. I've been into Adwords at about $150-$200 a day since my well publicised dramas back in feb (fuck you Matt Cutts - you pie eating cunt).

I have been getting a good ROI on that but wasn't quite happy and wasn't really getting myself anywhere trying to learn online. Last week I did a half day Advanced Adwords Course. It cost me about $450 for the course. Have a look at the screenshot below to see the improvements, the paused campaigns are my old ones, and the live campaigns are the replacement ones.
One really telling point in the course was that both the 2 others there had accounts that were setup by PPC managers, and while they were very ordered, very neat well set up accounts, they simply were not converting well enough for them. Mine was messy as hell with very low CTR's and ad positionings and I was making money - they weren't. And the reason they weren't was because of the PPC managers not knowing their business.
You've already spent hours doing your own keyword research, and know your own business back to front, so do a bit of study and take control of it yourself. It'll be the best outcome in the long run and you'll also add another string to your bow in the fact you'll be able to sell yourself out as a PPC manager if times get tough.

I did alot of research choosing my course provider, as the vast majority are targeted towards beginers and looked like too much fluff. Make sure it's an advanced course. Here's the link to the place I used (no good for you as you're a pom, but it may give you some ideas) http://webtrainingworkshop.com.au/adwords-training-courses.php (and we'll have those ashes back this summer thanks!)

Personally, I would just be very skeptical of this, if you can make good returns with adwords, why would you do anything else except build your own sites and offers?

Well, l am just another guy who take PPC project either at Per lead basis (Preferred) or a monthly Fees.

Here is the thing - Why I wouldn't do it for myself and make a killing? .. The people i work with are business owners with full of resources except one thing - leads. I do know how to get leads or people but i dont have resources to fulfill them. We both join hands. I provide leads/buyers and they have their service.. Both happy.

Let's take a real life example for one of the project . I am working with a Business from UK. They have a training institute which cost range at 1200-1300 GBP per student they take. I setup a campaign in adwords and after couple weeks of optimization I am able to send them leads at a cost of 4.9 GBP per lead.. the leads i am sending is converting at 1 out of 10 (On Avg as per our data).

Their pure profit is 250-300 GBP per student he gets. Do you see the math here ?

So,
their cost per Student is = 4.9 * 10 = 49 GBP
Their Profit per student is = 250 GBP (The minimum)
Their net profit per Student = 250-49 GBP Adwords cost = 200 GBP.

Now that's fair enough right ? They are very happy with this setup and giving me 25 GBP per sale generated through adwords as bonus . Now since everything is automated and established for me I have nothing to do except checking once in a while.

Now let's look at it this way - why would you do anything else except build your own sites and offers?
I don't have skills to setup a fully functional that kind of business in UK or anywhere else for that matter, plus that is not my area of interest/expertise. I would rather be happy making a decent living providing leads/buyers to others rather than building my own everything here..

For the people wondering why can't i just get a clickbank offer and promote it via adwrods.. NO there is a lot difference is selling a clickbank product and selling a real business lead/buyer..

For them who wonder about cost and return, here it is for the example account.

what should I think about;
Just see their track record and ask for a report of a week or 2 rather than a screenshot showing something, let it be anything..

In the report see these points-

1. The CTR of day 1 , the CTR of day 7
2. the CPC of day 1 and the CPC at last day
3. their avg position on day 1 and end
4. If conversion tracking is enabled, see the cost per convert and the trend.

Of-course the candidate should provide a report of an account he managed recently and where he made changes which made the above ups downs...

what would you do differently in thinking back?
1. make sure to create the account yourself and then invite him back (either email or MCC).
2. A good manager will have no issue in giving full access to your account while working from his MCC.
3. ask him to configure reports (As per your needs, weekly or daily. a daily report takes minutes to configure and does not harm either parties. its not lame to ask for one. A daily report (Overall account performence, a weekly report segmented by DAY for Adgroup performences plus a weekly report (if you are familiar with keywords) with keyword performence. it usually depends on the way the account is (budget wise).
4. do keep a tab on the reports and see how it's going.

Why not ask here for some PPC experts? I know most of the guys here do marketing for their own products or affiliate networks but Google Certified Individuals like me would like to offer PPC services at good rates.

Many here said why would someone do PPC for others. There are a lot of marketing agencies who only do marketing for others. Not everybody has a product or want to get into sales. They are just happy managing others accounts. Plus, it can get very profitable once they have many clients from similar niches due to economy of scale. More profit for less efforts as they have already done lots of research on those niches already.
